Chapter Six

885 Words
Mr Wolfe’s POV As I approach the car park of my office I notice a different car parked near where I usually park. A white smart looking Mazda. Hmmmm guess one of my staff bought a new car. Without thinking further, I head inside with my laptop bag and nod at security as I walk past and head to the elevator. As I approach the 5th floor in the elevator I check my watch. It’s 08:35. This is the latest I’ve gotten here in a very long time. Must’ve needed that extra hour in bed this morning. I stride down the hallway to the staff room to get a coffee before I sit down in my office. When I walk into the staff room I never expected the person who stood before me. Miss Snow. Oblivious to her surroundings, I walk over to the coffee machine and gently touch her arm to bring her out of her trance. s**t! She jumps out of her skin by a mile. We exchange quick chatter as I get the coffee I’m in desperate need of. I notice she’s making some kind of herbal tea, definitely not my cup of tea if you ask me but each to their own. When she states she’d rather come start work now it’s like music to my ears. Workaholic like myself. I must admit she looks even nicer today than yesterday, she’s definitely took the dress code policy into account. If she carries on like this she’s going to do well here. As long as she can dissect manuscripts like a science project. She follows me to the office. I notice her trying to catch up so I unnoticeably slow down a touch for her to catch up. Soon we get to my door and we enter. Once in my office I start setting everything up but when I turn to look at Evangeline she looks uncomfortable. Almost embarrassed. I quickly question what’s wrong? She tells me and as simple and silly I think it sounds she genuinely looked traumatised. I wonder what she’s been through to make her this jumpy? Once she has put the salad in the fridge she comes to sit across from me, pulling out her work items. I’m impressed she came prepared. You’d be shocked the amount of people no matter of experience who sit across from me without a single pen or paper. It’s ridiculous really we’re in a publishing house. Once set up she looks up as if she awaiting instruction. “So on a Tuesday at 10am me, the board and some editors look at new authors. People who’ve never written a book before send a manuscript in and we assess it and see if it is worth our time. Even if the manuscript is for a ghost writer still needs to be worthy of having my publishing house name on it,” I spoke clearly to ensure she hears everything and takes it in. I can’t stand repeating myself. “Yes sir, so what’s the task ahead you said you had something for me to do?” Hmmm that I do. It’s head spinning how quick she can turn the confidence on and off you wouldn’t believe she was terrified of asking for a fridge five minutes ago. “You’re correct Miss Snow. I want you to have a look at one of the manuscripts that’ll be in the meeting this morning. Annotate it and see what you think. I know what my editor thinks, I’d like to see what you think,” I wonder if she is as good as Lauren made out. We’ll soon find out won’t we. “Yes Mr Wolfe. Have you got the manuscript to hand? Also my name is Evie if you want to be formal in the board room or in front of people that’s fine but no need to keep calling me by my last name in your office. Makes me feel old,” she chuckles at the last bit. I wondered if she liked being called Evie. I remember my grandmas words too often. The day is long enough to say someone’s full name. She usually said that when people call me Alex instead of Alexander. Although I do prefer Alex. It’s easier and quicker, Alexander makes me feel like I’m being told off by my mother. “Ok Evie, in that case since we’re working together for the day I’ll make it easier for you. In here when it’s just us you can call me Alex. If someone is around you call me Mr Wolfe is that clear? I’ll call you Miss Snow in front of others to respect goes both ways,” she gives a nod of approval “Secondly the manuscript is here I printed it off last night since I knew we hadn’t given you a work laptop yet. That should be ready by Friday.” She takes the papers from me and asks to go sit on the sofa so she can spread out a little whilst looking and annotating. I give her the go ahead knowing she won’t be able to have much room on my desk. I watch her go over there and make a start whilst I sign off on some emails and accept some meetings.
