Chapter 3- Signed in Bloodless Ink

Something wet splashed across my face. I gasped and opened my eyes. My head pounded, my memory slipping through my fingers. Light burned my vision, forcing me to blink several times. When my vision adjusted, I realized I was sitting upright in some dark, musty place that reeked of blood and damp stone. I couldn’t move. Chains. They were wrapped around my arms and legs, cold and tight. My limbs felt like dead weight- unresponsive. I tried moving, but each movement sent a jolt of pain up my arms and legs. Someone laughed. I lifted my head slowly and saw a woman standing in front of me—she was built like a wall, thick muscles, broad shoulders, knuckles bruised and split as if she used them often. “Well,” she said, smiling slowly. “The princess decided to wake up.” I tried to search my memory, but nothing came clearly to mind. What had I missed? Where had my plan gone wrong? my thoughts were cut short when- “You’re all so stupid,” she sneered. “Your boss sent you straight to your own grave.” Her words felt like torture in my ears. “What do you want from me?” I asked, my voice hoarse. “Why am I here?” “You don’t get to ask questions, pretty lady,” the man standing beside her said calmly. His dark hair fell over his forehead, shadowing a smile that didn’t reach his cold gray eyes. “You really don’t want to see what I can do to pretty ladies who don’t know how to obey,” the woman said as she stepped closer, her face inches from mine. “What are you going to do?” I smirked. “Kill me?” I spat in her face. Her expression twisted instantly. Veins throbbed along her temples as she slapped me hard. Again. Again. Pain exploded across my face until I tasted blood. Just as she raised her hand again, the man grabbed her. “Stop, Alex,” he ordered, restraining her like a wild animal. I laughed despite the pain. “Is that all you’ve got?” “There’s more where that came from,” she hissed after calming herself. “Torture and pain only make me stronger,” I replied coldly. “So save yourself the trouble. They grinned as they left, the door locking behind them. Alone, my mind finally cleared. What went wrong during the operation? Why was I so weak? What would happen to Anna? Would I ever get out of here? Would I ever get to see her again? My chest ached, my arms burned where the chains cut into my wrists, and yet a fire of determination began to rise inside me. 2 weeks later, I didn’t know how many days had passed. Time blurred. My wounds began to heal as isolation gnawed at me, driving me closer to madness with every passing hour. Then I heard voices outside. “She’s been here for so long,” one man said. “I wonder what’ll happen to her.” “I almost feel sorry for her,” another replied. “But I won’t lie—she’s beautiful. Built like a goddess. I’d like a taste.” The words made my stomach churn. Rage flooded me. I imagined ripping their eyes out, silencing them forever. Then something else caught my attention. “Watch your mouth,” the first said. “She belongs to the boss.” “ I'm sure the boss wouldn't mind me having her for just a day.” He said, a cruel smirk in his tone. Their voices faded, leaving my thoughts racing. Belongs to the boss? Before I could process it, the door opened. Alex walked in again—with the same man. But something was different. Her steps were uneven like she was limping and bandage reflected from her wrist where a wound had bled. The man held a piece of paper. “How has your day been, pretty lady?” he asked, stepping closer. I ignored him. “I understand your silence,” he continued smoothly. “On behalf of my twin, Alex, I apologize.” I smirked. “She can say that herself.” Alex’s fists clenched, her jaw tightening. “Let’s move on,” he said calmly. “My name is Axel. We haven’t formally met.” He smiled politely before placing the paper on the small desk attached to my chair. “We just need you to sign this document. The details aren’t for you to know.” I burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the room. “You think I’ll sign something for you, much less something I haven’t read?” I scoffed. “Your boss must be the stupid one then.” Alex stepped forward. “Let me break her ego—” We stared at each other, tension crackling in the air. I was sure it wasn’t me who would break first. “Our boss expected this,” Axel interrupted. “So he prepared a surprise.” I was about to respond when I heard a familiar laugh echoing from the screen. Anna. My blood boiled. “One hand on her,” I said through clenched teeth, “and I’ll ruin you and your boss. I'll be sure to make your lives nothing but fire and ashes!” “Watch carefully, pretty lady,” Axel said, not caring about what I just said. I saw a man step beside my sister. They were smiling and she got into his car. I snapped because I knew that was one of his men. I thrashed violently against the chains, screaming through the pain. “You’re despicable! You couldn’t break me, so you target a child!” My voice cracked with fury. “I know you’re watching, Leonardo. Face me like a man instead of hiding in the shadows!” Silence was all I got. I had to make a decision I knew I would regret. “You win,” I whispered brokenly. “I’ll sign. Just leave her alone.” Tears blurred my vision as I signed the contract. I had never lost control before. But Anna was right. I was pathetic. “I didn't think you would break so easily,”Alex said. They turned to leave when she paused. She looked back, smiled, and said softly, “Your partner sends his regards.” The door slammed shut. I sat alone in the darkness, too weak to react, too afraid to think what bad things might have happened to David but I knew then—this was only the beginning of my worst days.
