Chapter 2

I was craving the sight of Gina's eyes. I decided to go where most of us high school students went after school. I hoped I would come across her. Something about Gina made her seem so...appetizing. I was starting to get thirsty. Luckily, I lived right next to the woods. I needed a little more than people food. I'm sure a squirrel will do. I wasn't exhausted, which was a good thing. That's also because I hadn't used any of my magic. The hunger would have been easier to ignore if I had drained an animal the day before. I knew I had to be careful in California. There were probably hunters waiting for their first whiff of a vampire. I wasn't going to be the one tipping them off. Bigger towns tended to have more hunters. I wasn't going to run; unless absolutely needed. I jumped from the second story of an old cottage. The cottage was my parents' centuries ago. Returning home was nice while painful. My feet landed on the grass. My heightened sense of hearing catching the sound of movement. Something was running through the trees. I focused on the sound; allowing myself to feel where the animal was. It was a small creature. A squirrel. Perfect. I located the position of the animal and let my feet guide themselves. My canines extended into sharp fangs. They prodded my bottom lip. This feeling running through my body empowered me. My body shuddered with anticipation, predatory instincts kicking in. I was satiated for the moment. My fangs retracted into my gums, replacing them with my canines. I licked the remaining blood off of my lips. I let out a low hum, teeth retracting into my gums again. I checked my phone. I still had time. An hour until closing(10:30). She's probably already at home. It never hurt anyone to try. With that thought, I ran towards the restaurant. Everything passed by in a blur. I looked to the sign. Oaklandia Cafe, it read. She was sitting there, in all her height and glory, computer open, sipping on a mug of coffee. Her hands flew across the keys as she typed something out in her computer. A blonde headed, albino, freckled, short, slim waitress walked up to Gina with a cinnamon roll on a plate. I opened the door, revelling in the smell of coffee and food. I walked up to the counter and ordered a black coffee with a shot of espresso, and a ham sandwich. I sat at a table close enough for me to see her, but far enough she wouldn't see me immediately. A raven-haired, very pale, tall, skinny woman walked over to Gina's table. I focused my ears on her words. "You smell delicious," she took in a long breath. She leaned in. I began to whisper. "Excuse you. I know you can hear me," her jaw clenched. "Take a step back. If you've got a problem, we can take this outside." The girl moved away from Gina, heading outside. Something in my body began to warm at the thought of her being safe. My hands began to light with a yellow glow. It transferred from my hands to surround Gina. It was a warm light. One I had never experienced before. It was warm enough to bring the undead chill from my bones. I disappeared out the door in a blur of seconds, milliseconds. I met the raven-haired woman outside. It seemed she had brought a few friends. Both of them newer vampires. There eyes were a darker red, instead of the lighter red associated with older vampires. "I suggest you leave," I warned, teeth gritted. The girl and her friends laughed in sync. It caused my hair to stand on end. "This has nothing to do with you, babe." The burliest, newest vampire spoke. I could tell he was the newest because his hair was too light, eyes too dark, nails too long, skin too tan. Eventually, you get, almost, chalk-white skin, light red eyes, and darker hair. "Actually, it does. That girl you were after," I stared at the raven-haired woman. "She's mine. Back off. I've warned you. Now, make your decision." "Who do you think you are?" The raven-haired girl accused. "Theresa Smith. Hybrid." I held out my hand, which sparked with red light. "If you're suicidal, come and get me," I challenged. My hand glowed brighter. The red almost encompassing my wrists. " You may also know me as Tessa, Tess, that b***h, or her. "You," she snarled. "That's a new one." She lurched for me. I jumped causing her to crash into the wall. "Leave the girl alone." "No." She hurtled toward me again. Her henchmen watching. "What are you guys doing? I need help." Her teeth clamped together, incisors showing. "They really are stupid." I flipped over them as they threw themselves at me. I flicked my wrist, hitting one of the guys straight in the chest. His heart came out through the back of his chest. I aimed my anger at the raven-haired woman. It was like a hand had wrapped around her throat. She floated towards me, until she was about a foot away from me. "What do you want from her?" I growled. "Wouldn't you like to know?" She snarked. I tightened my hold, as did the red circle. She spit blood onto my face. I swiped at it with my wrist. "That was rude." I tightened my grip a little more. "What. Do. You. Want. With. Her." Her last goonie tried to sneak up on me. I shot out at his face with a fireball. It burned away his flesh, leaving him on the floor. "Now, why do you need Gina?" "Oh? Is that her name?" She chuckled. "Too bad, you aren't allowed to know." She dug her hand into her chest, pulling out her own heart. "Great," I mumbled. "More secrets."
