Chasing a fox

How I hated those little ferrets. How they did this s**t right under my nose. And I wasn´t a single step closer to get them. My father, the packs Alpha, told me to handle the situation with the nasty foxes, and as the future Alpha it is not an option for me to fail. I stood in the kitchens door frame, and when I saw this mess, I got a strong urge to wipe them all out. But as my father told me, we are the stronger race, an attack would end in a m******e, and who are we to call us wolves, great warriors, if we can´t protect ourselves against thieves and troublemakers? I needed to stop them, I needed to make clear, that they shouldn´t mess with us. But their lack of respect made me furious. I closed my eyes for a moment, to calm down and focus on my job.

“Ah, we had visitors again, last night?“, I heard Ethan, my future Beat, who approached me with a smile and a light pat on my shoulder. Even if he helped me with my task, he also enjoys my misery and loves to make fun of me. But it lighted my mood to give him a push and see him stumble. Now it´s my turn to smile and I know that´s all Ethan wanted, that´s why he´s my best friend.

“What a disaster.“, he muttered. “Look a the bacon, Caspar. What has he ever done to anybody?“, he asked me while kneeling next to the poor bacon and poked it gently.

"They get sassier each time." I looked over the flour covered room and inspected the different footprints. "Clearly foxes. Two, it seems, and the human ones are very small, from a woman or child."

"They came trough this window, they picked the lock." Ethan leaned his upper body out of the window to get a survey of their way. "I guess they just walked near the trees and walls, they are pretty small and can easy hide themselves pretty well. Here are a few footprints outside, we can try to track them."

"We should, at least to see where the´ve crossed our lines. But I can smell nothing, they are long gone.", I exhaled frustrated. "A few pack members told me, they woke up last night, but when everything was silent, and they couldn´t notice something strange, they fall back asleep."

"So i guess we get canned food for today.", Ethan complained while he left the room.

"That´s your only worry, isn´t it?" I asked my friend while raising an eyebrow, a light smirk on my face.

"You shouldn´t trivialize that. And who is going to clean that mess up?"

"Oh.", I said while my smirk is getting brighter. "Let me handle that." I throw one last glance at the room, before I followed Ethan out of the kitchen.

“Meet me outside that window, give me ten minutes.” He nod and left me.

I walked towards the living room, searching for some boys. Andrew, Mica and George skipped training a few days ago and sneaked into the city instead to have a nice day. As the future Alpha I took care of such incidents, so my father had less work and I learned how to rule a pack, with him backing me up.

They are 15, and I remember me, 7 years ago at their age, doing the same with Ethan. My father made us clean every pack car, inside and out, and we weren´t very attempt for an iteration. I planned the same for these kids.

I found them chilling on a couch with some other teenager. The moment I entered the room, they all tensed up, everyone froze in their place while I narrowed my eyes at them. I knew I was still angered about what happened earlier and it radiated from my strained body. But this should be a lesson for them, so I let them hang a bit longer. Some searched for an escape, but no one dare to move. Finally I focused my three targets and build myself up in front of them.

I could heard the other kids in the room taking a deep breath of relive.

“Andrew, Mica, George.” My voice was powerful and demanded obedience. If possible, they sank even deeper into the couch, when I looked at them, and no one dares to make eye contact.

“As I told you before, I won´t tolerate such careless behavior. But I have a perfect duty for you, as indemnification and to make sure there won´t be a repeat of your actions.”

I threw a glance at everyone inside the room.

“You will now go to Susan into the kitchen and follow her orders. You won´t leave before everything looks fine.”

“Yes Alpha.”, came their respond in unison. It is a sign of a respect, even I was not the official Alpha yet. My father would hand me the title over when I´ll found my mate or when he´s not longer capable to rule the pack.

I took a step back to release them, and they ran away quickly. I hid a smirk till I´ve left the room and the pack house to met Ethan.

“Susan, I got you some helper, let them work hard.” I mind linked her quickly.

“Thanks Caspar. I really appreciate that.” I closed the mind link and nod at a waiting Ethan. He already changed into his wolf form, from which tall frame you can tell he is a beta.

“Everything fine?”, he asked me through our private link.

“The kids where very willing to help.” Ethan laughed at that, probably thinking of us back then, washing the cars.

“So they came in here?” I asked the dark brown wolf, as I know him, he had everything nearby already inspected.

“Indeed. There is paltry damage, I guess they had some kind of tool, must have gone really quick to open the lock. You were right, there were two of them. The one with the small human foots opened the window, the other one stayed in fox form the whole time. The steps are hard to see, but it seems like they came from this side. Should we see if we find something over there, at the trees, where the ground is softer and muddy?”

“Good plan.” I approved while taking my clothes of, to shift into my black wolf. Together we followed the footprints as good as possible, it was in fact easier to see them in the woods, but somewhere they just disappeared.

“They must have crouched. Otherwise I couldn´t explain this. But the border is near, so I suppose they took the straight way from here on. “

“Agree.”

We trot to the end of our territory but still couldn´t find a hint of the two foxes. Even when we searched for an hour, still nothing. Needless to say my mood was down, but at least we knew the rough direction they came from.
