There was nothing to be done now, her path was chosen for her. Going back does nothing but ensure death. Going forward carries the promise of death but beyond her doomed path, there was a glimmer of life, of hope. There was a chance that the frozen wasteland wasn't as doom and gloom as it was made out to be.
Patting her leather bag that was wound tightly around her waist, she drove Serrena forward and began to fly over the gorge.
It was earily quiet as they flew even the wind was a still silent whisper to her ears, everything was peaceful and still. Elaine sat up and looked over her dragon, a few scratches and the scrape on her back was healing quickly and almost closed already. No one had yet understood why but Serrena always healed faster than other dragons her size, she would be good in no time at all.
Half way across the gorge and all was quiet, glad the rumours and stories were wrong, she sat up and started to enjoy the warm air that came up from the gorge, it was nice to have heat after three days of cold winds and rain. The heat warmed her chilled skin and refreshed her muscles. Finally relaxed, she never felt so calm. It had been a long time since she didn't have to worry about what was chasing after her or who could be watching her. So much so that she almost didnt notice the low growl emanating from below. The wind became stronger and the sound of thunder could be heard, this thunder was not from the clouds but from below. Serrena started to fly faster, pushing her wings hard. She was a fast dragon, but even she could not escape everything. Staring below Elaine understood what her father said years ago and realised just how true it was now.
---------------Flashback---------------
She was small maybe eight, Elaine was playing quietly on her own on the floor in the middle of the room. The room painted in gold and silver that shined in the light. The room filled with colour and love. Elaine ignored the loud booming adult voices shouting from the rooms below, she did not care for what they were saying she was happy right were she was, playing with her toys as if they could talk back.
After the shouting had stopped, strong powerful strides echoed down the hall, then whispers of her parents voices. Elaine was over joyed, daddy was home from his trip, but when she reached for the intricate gold handle of the door she hesitated. She didnt know why she stopped herself but she decided to listen to what her parents were saying.
"... my Lily, you know i would not leave again so soon if i did not have too." Her fathers deep caring voice carried through the halls even at a whisper, Elaine could imagine him comforting her mother. Brushing his hand over her soft cheek, his green eyes looking into her blue ones as he held her small frame up against his broad one. His scruffy chin thats has missed its shave for the last few days resting on her mothers head.
" I don't understand, you've only just returned and we are at peace, there has been no attacks on the haven in some time. Why now does your king send you away" her mothers quiet voice even smaller, carrying a plea for her husband not to leave them both again.
"All is calm now, but there will be a storm greater and stronger than before. But that does not mean we should not enjoy the calm whilst its here"
Elaine opened the door and rushed towards her father, "Daddy! You're back!" The dream started to fade and she never reached her fathers open arms.
-------------End of Flashback----------
The calm was coming to an end. The storm was approaching and Elaine would do anything to hold onto the happy memories she had before she found herself here. She wanted to remeber her mother and father. Remeber her parents swinging her in their arms as they walked, her mother holding her and bandaging up her scuffed knee. She wanted to remeber the rainy days she spent running through the streets with her best friend when she was younger and years later the conection they shared.
As a tear slipped from her chin she stood on the back of her powerfull dragon and drew her two swords. One bearing her fathers emblem and the other her mothers. She would not die today. She would fight and prove those people who said she was weak wrong.
The hordes rose up, black feathers falling out of there scarred bloody bodies, the sound of thunder came from thousands of beating wings deafening any other sound. Red emotionless eyes glowing from the depths of their skulls. A sea of black and red raced towards her.
Twisted talons and broken teeth flashed in front of Elaine. Swinnging her fathers sword she sliced the beasts in half, only to be faced with more talons and more teeth. She was doing her best to keep the monsters off her dragon, she could not see how much further there was to go but simply trusted Serrena to deliever her safely. Wings and scales scrapped across her cheek, talons clawed at her arms and legs. She faught on, slaying one after another moving across the dragons body as if it was a rehearsed dance. Her hair whipping behind her and her short leather armoured skirt flicking up as she coiled and spun attacking with ferocious energy. There was so many beasts that as she killed one, another would already be in its place. Their numbers got greater and Elaine began to tire. She had been fighting for a while now, her muscles were sore he wounds stung and her blood was sticking to her clothes but her determination had not yet faulted.
The scent of fresh snow wafted to Elaine's nose. Giving her hope that they were approaching an end, distracting her just a little. A large black monster with big pointy scaly wings flew straight towards her but she was facing the wrong way. A heavy blow came to the back of her head, knocking her down onto her knees. Hazed and dizzy she stood back up and sliced at the larger beast. Two, three, four hits, the beast still did not die. A loud pained screech filled the air as Serrena started to faulter. Another heavy blow knocked Elaine down weak from her many deep cuts. She found it too hard to stand, replacing her swords she took out her daggers, plain and simple but sharp. They would do better for closer battles. Suddenly the surfce beneath her started to tilt down. She started to slide towards Serrena's head when the final blow of the battle met her. All she saw was black
