Pain and Power

1290 Words
Black. That was all Elaine could see but she could feel warm sparks on her skin as she started to be able to feel her body again. The heat in the room awakening her sore muscles. She then heard the whispers of other people and the shuffling of feet. She hoped that Serrena hadn't flown her back to the haven. She must have, there is no warmth in the frozen wasteland, there is no people. But if she had then why was she still alive, why would they put her on a bed and in a heated room. They should have killed her. Wait, where was Serrena, she couldn't feel her scales or hear her breath. She couldn't sense her near by, what if she died to keep her alive. What if she had no dragon anymore. What if she was stuck where she was forever. Serrena was apart of her, how would she continue without a part of her. she couldn't lose her dragon. Elaine groaned finally feeling the pain in her body, the deep cuts and bruises making it hard for her to breath. Her head was fuzzy and pounding but she couldn't tell if it was from the fall or the fight. The room had fallen silent and she could sense them staring at her. As if themselves had doubted she was still alive. Why wouldn't they, she looked beaten and bloodied and probably resembled the dead easily. It took her a few attempts to open her eyes blinking away the darkness into a dull fire lit room. "Woah, she lives! My creation, Shes alive! Mwahahahahaaaaa" A masculine cackle sounded from behind her. "Shut up Darren, stop messing around" "Alright fine, ill go check on the dragon then, make sure it hasnt eaten any of the dogs" a cold breeze follwed and the sound of fabric being pushed aside. Dragon...what dragon. Wait. "Serrena!" Elaine bolted up, ignoring the screaming pain from her body and willing her limbs to move. She threw off the blanket covering her and jumped out of bed. She pushed past the blond haired man sitting by her and rushed after the one claiming to check on the dragon. She didnt care that she wasn't in her armour or about the cold attaking her. She even ignored the voice of the man in the tent shouting at her to stop because she hadn't healed yet. She didn't care, all she wanted was to see her dragon again, make sure Serrena was alive and to show her that she was okay. Elaine stumbled after the man, he had walked around a snow drift and she couldnt see him any more. She didn't want to loose sight of him and tried to go faster to catch up but her legs gave out on her and she fell. Pain shot up from her bruised knees and she could feel the snow stinging at her legs. The pain was mind numbing, her vision started to blur. Then felt the soft, warm material of a cloak being wrapped around her shoulders. She looked up into the face of a kind old man who held understanding in his eyes as he lifted her to her feet. He wasn't as frail as he looked, or Elaine was a lot skinnier than she thought. "Come, I will take you to your dragon." The old man led Elaine slowly around the snow bank. In front of her now lay her dragon, growling at the man she was following before. She could see Serrena was frustrated but tolerating the i***t, he was asking if she could breathe fire and wanted her to show him. A stupid obvious question that deserved the glare from her dragon. "Leave her in peace boy." Suprisingly the words hadn't come from her mouth but that of the old man, who gently removed his arm from supporting her. Allowing her to move towards her dragon at her own pace. Serrena finally looked towards her rider and stood up, her large swift frame overshadowing the young man. A bit frightened he backed up to where the old man was and now the blond from the tent was standing there too. Elaine did not care for the audience or the cloak slipping from her shoulders. She did not notice the snow and ice crunching underfoot or her wound on her abdomen opening further as she hobbled forward. She simply stood infront of her dragon and raised her hand, staring into the eyes of her magnificent proud beast. The blood now gone, the sun bounced off her scales onto the snow painting it with shades of turquoise and blue, mimicking the warm summer seas of the south. She spread her wings casting vast shadows and dipped her long neck forward, placing her nose against her riders hand. Suddenly the three men shielded their eyes from a flash of blinding, brilliant white light. When it passed they saw the girl looking less affected by her wounds, walking easier, trailing her fingers across the scales of the dragons neck. The girl now seemed elegant and angelic as she proudly circled the creature, assessing her body, never removing her delicate fingers from the rough dragon scale. Where Serrena had missing scales and cuts before she seemed flawless, beautiful and even more powerful now. As Elaine moved around her dragon checking for injuries she felt her body healing, her cuts pulling together, her bruises, tired limbs and fuzzy head all vanishing. She could now think clearly and move freely. As she came back to the chest of her dragon and moved to climb on its back, pain shot through her. Clutching her left side side she remebered the deep cut on her abdomen, her wound not healing as the others had but bleeding and staining the fabic of her clothes and armour, the wound opening further from the movement. Abandoning the thought of taking a quick flight she headed towards the three men. "Thankyou for allowing us to witness that, the connection between a true rider and their dragon is powerful and pure. My name is Vince. " the old man proclamed as a gentle smile appeared across his aged face. "This is Darren" Vince gestured towards the brown haired young man that was pestering Serrena before. Darren had dark brown eyes to match his hair, a strong broad frame and wide stance. If she hadn't witnessed his almost childish behaviour earlier he would have seemed intimidating. Darren then nodded towards the blond with a playful smirk growing beneath his dark scruff of facial hair. "and this is Lucie." The bright blue eyes stood out to Elaine, she stared into them losing herself. She noticed them staring straight back and glanced away, a warm blush rising to her cheeks. A small cough from the blond bought Elaine back from her dream state. His slightly embarrassed smile and calm voice soothed Elaine. "My younger sister calls me Lucie, Darren wishes my sister paid him more attention so calls me it too. My actual name is Lucian." He was around the same height as Darren but seemed smaller due to his slighter frame. The long, thick furred parka hiding the smooth skin and defined muscles toned from hardwork. "Hey! I do not! I call you it because it makes you sound like a girl to match your apperance. Dont want people getting the wrong idea" Darren mumbled back, not wanting to be viewed as crushing on his best friends sister. "Enough both of you, our rider needs to rest" Vince softly silenced the boys with a flick of his hand before they could start bickering again and gestured for her to follow. "Elaine, my name is Elaine"
