A Dragon

He stood there, alone, on top of a drift, watching the black hordes of the blood gorge soaring up into the grey clouds. They looked like bees swarming to protect its queen. Something or someone has disturbed them and from all the excited screeches, and hungry shrills the horde sounds like its out for the kill. He shivered, not from the thought of whatever poor creature decided to take on the horde but because there was no hope for them but the cold wind that managed to push its way through his thick grey parka. The sky was starting to show signs of darkness, it gets dark quickly here and once the sun was gone the temperature dropped even more, freezing small mammals that didn't get back in their holes fast enough. Soon his group would need to stop to make camp, build a warm fire and erect their tents but no matter how hard he tried he could no peel his eyes away from the way the hordes danced and shifted while going after its prey. Soft foot steps and then a familiar gentle old voice sounded from behind him, "lets leave, whomever it is will not survive that many of them or a fall from that height, come" the foot steps that were already quietened by the snow grew faint. Telling him that he was expected to follow without complaint. As he turned to leave he saw something different, unexpected. One of the horde had fallen."Lucian, come." The older voice repeated gently. "Wait" Lucian whispered. "There did you see?" When Lucian didn't get a response he looked to his mentor, the old mans brow had furrowed showing more wrinkles that further betrayed his age. In his eyes Lucian could see curiosity and maybe even bit of confusion which was rare to see in his old mentor. "Intresting" the old man seemed to say to himself as another black shape fell. They stayed, and watched as one after another fell, intrigued by what they saw. Almost consumed in curiosity. The pair jumped when a loud pained screech filled the air. The number and speed of which the black figures fell had slowed. There wasnt much of anything happening now. Just the sight of more and more shapes flying up into the clouds. One more fell. But this shape wasnt like the others its was smaller and didnt have wings. This confused both men for only a second when they saw the figure of a great beast, a dragon, falling after its rider. As they watched them fall the dragon was speeding up and caught up with its rider. It then rolled him into his wing as the dragon spun. The ground was getting closer and Lucian unknowingly took a step forward. There was a loud thud, and all the two men could see now was a white puff of fresh snow that was forced into the air, as if the snow had eaten the rider and his dragon as they fell. Lucian looked to his mentor and ran away from the site where the pair had landed. He ran towards his dog sled. His team lead by a large black dog sprinted back, past his mentor who was slowly making his way to his own sled, towards the disturbed snow. Once the snow had settled Lucian could finally see his target, still a little way away the first thing he noticed, other than the great dragon was the red snow stained with blood. As he neared his dogs became uneasy, they didn't like being so close to a dragon. He steped off his sled and threw a glance behind him, his mentor had gotten the rest of their group and were heading that way. He left the dogs nearby as not to push them more than neccessary, and slowly walked closer. He was amazed to see the dragon still alive, he had got alot closer than he anticipated and could see the way the scales shine turquoise. Although there were only a few areas that still showed that colour as most were coved in blood. He's seen a dragon after a fight before but not this much blood from one. It was lying on one of its wings, with the other wrapped around its body, its long tail curled around cover its snout. As Lucian edged closer the dragon raised its head and stared at him. He stared into the dragons deep sea blue eyes and all he saw was pain and concern as the dragon protected its rider. The dragons eyes flickered to the movement of the mans group but quickly returned to him. Wary over what they will do. The rest of the group had now stoped their dogs where Lucian had stopped his, but none, not even his mentor dared to step closer to the beast. Lucian kept his eyes on the dragons and continued to walk closer, slowly step by step. The dragon growled low when it believed he had got close enough. "Please, I just want to help your rider." Lucian begged holding out his hands to prove to the dragon he held no weapon. He approached a few more steps before the dragon growled, louder more protective this time. "I just want to make sure he's okay" The dragon huffed snow at him through its nose and started to move, uncurling its tail slowly, purposely moving it closer to Lucian. All the while staring into the mans eyes, calculating the risk. Lucian didn't want to move he wanted to help the rider but who would take on a dragon. The dragon then continued to move and uncurled its tail away from Lucian, then slowly lifted its wing. Lucian could see even more blood soaking the snow as the dragon moved, but worse is what he saw of the rider. The rider was smaller than he thought he would be, with long black hair that was matted and tangled. As the dragon moved a little more it extended the wing it was lying on the ground towards Lucian, allowing his rider to slowly roll down its wing towards him. Thats when he noticed how slight the rider was, as if the man hasn't had a meal in a while. That the rider was smaller than he thought he would be, smaller than he expected with such a large dragon. He saw how torn and broken his leather armour was and the number or injuries he sustained making Lucian doubt on the survival for the rider. Surprisingly the last thing he noticed was that it wasn't a man at all.
