ASIYA’s POV
Dear Diary,
I am elated. I honestly can't believe that after six long years of seriousness and hardship, I am now a graduate of high school. I am so happy, my joy knows no bounds, and to top it all, Baba informed me about my admission to Baze University Abuja. It is my dream university and fashion designing has been the course I have always wanted to study since when I was three years old because of my love for sketching dresses and creating new designs and style patterns.
As my family use to say, I am talented and I thank God for that, I thank God for my them and my best friend. Speaking of Latifa, I am so happy for her. We were friends since kindergarten and we still are, we decided to go to the same university, best friend goals.
She got her acknowledgment to study petrochemical engineering, the course she has always wanted because her brain likes calculations and she is a book worm but I am more of a dextrous person. I'm so hap.....
"Ke big head kistashi mutafi! Wayyo ko shiryawa bakiyi ba[You didn't even get ready]" My one and only dramatic best friend, Latifa, interrupted me.
"I love you too," I said and smirked just to annoy her the more.
Today is our prom and I am so engrossed in writing my diary. The excitement that comes with graduation from secondary school has made me forgotten that we are having a party, I quickly sat down on the vanity stool, waiting for Latifa to finish her endless rantings and do my makeup, she snickered and knocked my head.
"Ouch!" I yelled.
"That's what you get for not dressing up," Latifa scolded, I sat down and watched she decked my face up. She soon finished and draped my heatie in the turban style, I got dressed and we sauntered out.
"All thanks to you. Now our prom dates must be waiting for us, " said the annoyed Latifa.
"Kinga Mama?[Have you seen Mama]?" I asked, ignoring what she said.
"She is in my nose," said Latifa and shot me a deathly glare.
"Mommy," I shouted with so much enthusiasm.
"In the kitchen," She answered back, we headed for the kitchen and trudged in.
"Oh! My daughters, look at the way you are all grown up, you look so beautiful my babies." She finished on the verge of tears, my typical mama, but I love her anyway, we thanked her and walked over to her for a hug.
"Malam Musa will take you," said Mama.
"Alright," I retorted and we left. On our way out, we bumped into Ya Abdulsamad.
"Ya Abdul" We chorused and I went to hug him, patiently waiting for him to start his endless questions which, to be honest, I am already used to.
"Where are you going to?"
"Why are you wearing makeup?" I mentally rolled my eyes and told him we are going to our prom and we are already late.
"If any guy messes with my baby sisters I am only one call away and I will break his bones," He said while keeping a straight face, I chuckled and we entered the car. The drive to the place was long and by the time we got there, Latifa was fuming. I just looked at her and giggled.
"Hey babes we are here," I announced.
"Nonsense girl, did I say I don't know or do I look like a blind person?" She questioned.
"Sorry, ma! Now let's get going" I responded. After we alighted the car, she called Khaled, her prom date and also her boyfriend while I called Affan my prom date, they are also best friends and to be honest they are very good-looking.
When we were in year nine, Affan confessed his feelings to me but I rejected him because I didn't want to be dating my mate. Duh that's so silly, but as for Latifa, she accepted Khaled gladly, I asked her about it and she answered: "What girl will resist such a handsome guy like Khaled?" I just laughed and said
"Allah ya nuna mana bikinku.[May Allah show us your wedding]." And she mumbled an 'Ameen'.
The guys came and I can't deny the fact that Affan looked handsome in his blue suit matching the colour of my gown, while Khaled in his army green suit that suited the colour of Latifa's dress.
"Hey" Affan flashed me a grin. I just smiled shyly, we trudged inside with Latifa and Khaled trailing behind us. As we stepped in, I heard some side comments from our mates.
"Omg! They look so good together" said the first person.
"She is so lucky that the most handsome guy in our school is her prom date," Another one chirped.
"I heard that she begged him to be her date, she even cried her eyes out while kneeling in front of him," The third lady scoffed.
That must be Karima because she has a crush on him since when we were in year nine and from the day he confessed his feelings to me, she has been looking at me with distaste. As though Affan heard the last comment, we stopped and turned around then moseyed back to the spot they were stood.
"Hey young ladies," He smiled, I enjoyed watching them drool over him.
"Who said that last comment?" He asked and they all pointed at Karima who looked like she was having a panic attack, I internally smirked.
"If you ever say that to my girlfriend again I will be your worst nightmare I swear," He said, seriousness etched in his tone.
"Girlfriend?!" They all shouted at the same time, flabbergasted by his statement, even I am surprised but just kept quiet to watch the drama unfold.
"Yes! Girlfriend," He replied, irritated.
"Sorry Affan" Karima shivered after she said that.
"Am I the one you made a rude comment about earlier?"He questioned..
"Sorry, Asiya" Karima apologized.
"Better for you," An angry Affan said while glaring at her. When we walked away, I asked him.
"Why did you tell them I am your girlfriend?"
"Because if I didn't tell her that, she won't be as scared as she is now " He answered as a smirk appeared on his face. We stepped inside the main hall and we overhead the emcee saying:
"Hi everyone I am emcee Ukasha as you all know and congratulations on your graduation from high school, I hope you are all ready to dance and eat today, eat till you can't go out through the door and dance till you break your legs" Everyone laughed at his jokes and he continued.
"Anyway, we have a special guest, he is none other than your one and only, please welcome Joeboy" The hall was going crazy as everyone was eager to see Joeboy. The said guy came on stage and talked.
"Hello my lovely fans, thank you all for your love and support. I appreciate that" Everyone was hailing joeboy as he started singing one of his songs, 'lonely' that was booming from the loudspeakers.
Shey shey shey
You go come to my place
I need you in my space
Don't mind if you delay
I don't wanna be lonely, lonely tonight
I don't wanna be lonely, lonely tonight
We sang along, his voice wasn't even audible, only ours and the one from the loudspeakers, then another song named 'oreke' was played.
That your backside on flick
Say me I no go fit resist the kind of things you do to me believe
Yeye my oreke
I fit do anything for my oreke
You are my baby, you are my oreke
We sang many other songs of his before he went away, then guess what happened?!
My freaking best song was played, Cash App by Bella Shmurda. I love the song so much that I can't even control myself when it's being played, my legs started shaking and before I knew it, I started dancing, not to brag or anything but me and one of my mates, Abdulrahman are the best dancers in our set, the hall went crazy and we both went on the stage and danced as though our lives depend on it, by the time we finished, I couldn't even stand straight and I was sweating profusely, I went to the bathroom to adjust my dress and head tie. I finished everything and returned there while the emcee was making an announcement.
"As you all know, the next programme of the event is the awards starting from the most stylish(Male and female), most handsome, most beautiful, most popular, most social and the last but not the least, the award all students want but not all can get, the prom king and queen." Everyone cheered when the emcee opened the card to announce the awards.
"Most stylish male, Khaled Marwan." The crowd clapped as he went on stage to collect it.
"Yo man you deserve that" Affan shouted at his best friend, then the emcee continued his announcement till was time for the prom king and queen, the girls smoothened their dresses while the guys adjusted their suits, and the emcee cleared his throat and started announcing.
"The prom king is none other than Affan Ridwan " The crowd applauded when he went on stage for the coronation, no one is surprised because he is the most handsome and looked great in his suit, the emcee continued his announcement.
"The prom queen is none other than Asiya Zayyad Muhammad." It was unexpected as I stood there mouth agape and shocked to the core until Latifa pushed me towards the stage. I grinned like a loon when I was being crowned the freaking prom queen, I and Affan danced to the song 'you were supposed to be different' by Aron Wright.
We finished and snapped some pictures with my mates and all my friends because we might not be meeting with some of them ever again, I hugged Latifa and bid them farewell then left, Malam Musa already called to inform me he has arrived, I spotted the car in the parking lot and got in.
I arrived home and had my dinner, talked with Mama and Rahma for some time then prayed before drifting to la-la land.
