I wanted to scream at him. His kind made the Witches at the beginning to time. I held back my anger. "What happened after that? I mean, what happened with the child?"
"Sadly, only the fire soul survived the journey The water soul was eaten away by the child's body. Water phoenixes are rare and can only be carried by certain breed of human. Your breed, My Queen. They can only be carried by the one who has the dire wolf. Only those who are worthy enough in her eyes, will carry her children."
"If my first born is to carry your child, how would I carry a water phoenix? That's ten long years."
"It would be up to her if she wishes you to carry her child. I have no say when it comes to her. I will help you with the witches. That is our deal." He lifted his wings, getting ready to take off.
"Wait." I called out and he stopped, looking back at me. "Does she want a child?" I wanted to know. I was curious about it.
"Yes. We all do. I am 89 years old. The day my child is born, is the day I will ascend to be with my father in the stars. Our children are the only way we live on."
I was shocked. They would die out if they didn't do this? They had no other way to breed? "Is that the only way you can breed?" I blurted out.
"Yes. We have tried different ways over the years, but nothing worked. Using animals or those who have already pulled part of their soul, everything. The only way that actually works, is using a human." I felt bad for him and his kind. He really had it tough in this world. Even from the very beginning. "Also, I've been asked by the eldest water phoenix, to apologize for the mistake that was made all those years ago."
"N-no it's fine. I was born to fix everything it seems." I chuckled. "Seriously, I mean it. There is no need to be sorry. With your help, we can put a stop to Helena and her tyranny."
In the middle of the night, I stepped outside onto my balcony. I felt as if something was calling me to go out there. I sat there for at least twenty minutes before a large bird made of water, landed on the railing. "I apologize for calling you out here so late at night." Her voice was soft, like calming waves in the night. "I was told by a friend that you had made a deal with him."
I nodded. "Yes. I did. My first born carries his child until birth and he helps me defeat Helena. The queen of the witches." I explained.
"I see. Well, I'd like to offer my help, in exchange for something." She looked down at the ground, like she was embarrassed to be saying this.
"I will gladly make a deal with you. What is it you would like?" I leaned forward slightly, showing her that I am indeed interested in what she has to say.
"I've been watching you for a very long time. Since you were born really. I was supposed to ascend the day you were born, but I couldn't. I felt pulled to you for some reason. Then you turned of age and got your Beast. I knew you were the one, but I could not come forth to you. The elders in the stars told me that I had to wait. I've waited for a very long time. I am currently 118. The same as you are 18 today."
"What is this pull about?" I tilted my head a bit.
"You are to carry more than just one child of mine. You are to carry my twins. Will you do such for me?"
I nodded. "Yes. I will gladly carry them for you. When do you plan on putting them inside me?"
That night, I ended up becoming pregnant with twin phoenixes. With a water phoenix, it didn't matter what my gender was. They would become whatever they wanted to be. It didn't take me long to fall asleep that night after she left.
The next morning, I woke up, feeling very thirsty. This was what she warned me about. That the chicks would cause me to become dehydrated at all hours of the day. She also told me that the more water I drank, the faster they would grow. I headed to the kitchen and pulled out a two liter bottle of water, downing it in a matter of two minutes. "Well aren't you a thirsty girl this morning." Cora said, leading against the doorframe.
"Yeah. That's what happens when you're pregnant." I grabbed another bottle, still feeling thirsty.
"Wait what?! You're pregnant?!"
She yelled as loud that I thought the whole mountain would hear what she said. I giggled. "Yes. A water phoenix chose me to carry her children." I hadn't noticed that Ursis was standing behind me.
"I thought getting pregnant right now wouldn't be a good idea?" He said as he wrapped his arms around me. "Or is it that you don't want to carry my child?" He joked rubbing his nose on my neck.
"That is not true and you know it. I want our own, but she has waited 18 years and I couldn't make her wait any longer. Besides, the more water I drink, the faster they grow."
"I thought they could only give part of their soul when they were close to ascending?" Ursis sounded confused.
"That's true, but she's older. She's 118. The day I was born, she was supposed to ascend, but she couldn't because she felt a pull to me. Now that I'm 18 and I understand what needs to be done to keep them healthy, I am finally able to do so for her. I watched her ascend last night. It was beautiful."
"What did it look like, Mom?" Nikki bounced into the kitchen, hugging me tightly.
I sat everyone down at the table to tell them what it looked like. "It was beautiful. It was like the moon had shone down onto her. She closed her eyes and slowly, was lifted up to the sky. He body let go of the water it was made of to the clouds nearby and her soul kept going up and until a new star twinkled where she landed. For the next few days, she will be as bright as the north star." I smiled. "I can't describe it any better, but I hope you can picture it."
The day went by with me just sitting around and drinking a lot of water, but never going to use the ladies room. It was odd. My brain would tell me that I needed to, but I never did. With drinking over 12 liters of water now, I started to feel heavy. She had told me that this would happen. I'd need to drink at the very least, 30 liters before they would be big enough to enter the world, but if they chose not to, I'd have to down another 5 liters to force them out of me.
"How are you feeling?" Ursis asked, sitting down beside me on the couch.
"Heavy, but that's normal. I'm at 12 liters right now."
"How many liters before they can be born?" He wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
"30 at the very least and they will be big enough to enter the world. If they don't come of at 30, I have to down another 5 and force them out."
He nodded and got up to get me another bottle of water. I had planned on having them today. That way there would be two more water phoenixes in the world.
I had just finished drinking the last of the water to make it do 30 liters. I felt as if I was going to be sick. My stomach was extended and it was hard to get up. I called out for Ursis, telling him to get a bucket because I felt sick. When he came back, there was a loud tapping on the window. Ursis went and opened the window. I couldn't see anything though.
Another water phoenix flew into the house and landed just beside me. "Hello. I was sent here to assist in the birth of these twins." He said. He was bigger than the one I saw last night. "I was also told that today is your birthday." I nodded. "You won't need that bucket. When we are birthed, the human just throws us up and then we take to the sky. A gross process, but efficient. The chicks don't get harmed in the digestive track when they are thrown up."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. "Well they need to hurry up and come out because I don't particularly like the feeling of being nauseous." He chuckled, then gently pushed on my stomach. That alone caused me to heave and throw up.
"Hmm. That's weird. There were only supposed to be two." He said as I threw up two more times before falling back on the couch, trying to catch my breath.
The sound of three tiny chirps made me sit back up. I was shocked. There were only supposed to be two. "Why are there three? I don't understand." I looked at the phoenix with my brows furrowed in confusion.
"I don't either, but three's are not a good sign. I cannot take back three chicks. The smallest will be killed due to the curse of three's. I can't bare to watch another third be killed." His eyes reflected fear and sadness. I didn't know what to do for him. "Please, My Queen, raise him. Raise the third in secret so that he may live."
"I will, but she told me that there would be someone sent in her place to help me with Helena. Could that possibly be you?" I had to know. I would need all the help I could get in this war. Helena was strong, and so were her subjects. I was no where near capable to take her on alone.
"No. I am not the one. You will know when the time is right. Now I must go with the first two. The others are waiting for me to return." With that, he took the two biggest and flew away, leaving a very small chick behind for me to raise.
"What should I call you?" I thought to myself.
"Aalto. It's a Scandinavian name of Finnish origin. I means wave." Ben said, looking at the small water bird on the floor in front on me.
"Aalto." I repeated and the bird looked at me with its tiny eyes. "He seems to like it." I smiled. I'd raise this boy. I may not be his mother, but I did birth him, in a very strange way that no one will ever know about. It is rather embarrassing.
