Our fingers were intertwined, her hand feeling somewhat small in mine, delicate but certain. The sun had already set, leaving only a faint ribbon of golden light stretched low across the horizon, weaving through the silhouettes of the trees. It made the entire forest feel cloaked in a soft, almost sacred hush, the kind that came only at the edge of night. The leaves rustled gently in the faint breeze, whispering secrets as they shifted, but most of the forest’s creatures had already retreated to their shelters for the night, settling into sleep with the promise of waking early, ready to greet the morning with fresh energy. Perhaps Cora and I should have done the same. Maybe I should have wrapped her up in my arms again and pulled her close until we both drifted off into another good night
