BECAUSE WE WERE all worried about Zeb, the twenty-mile trip to Jacksonville Beach seemed to take forever. Finally, Norm said, “Here we are.”
I felt the car slow down and turn sharply, then slow down again and come to a halt, and Norm said, “Zeke, why don’t you run ahead and check on your brother? Josh and I will catch up with you.”
“Thanks,” Zeke said.
I heard the click of a door being opened, followed by a slam. Norm and I got out of the car, and I took his proffered elbow. After a short walk, I heard the whoosh of automatic doors opening, and Norm said, “We’re in the waiting area now. I see a seat over in one corner that isn’t surrounded by sick people; let me take you over there.”
