Chapter 19: Wedding Plans

547 Words
Emma had imagined getting engaged someday. She had imagined calling her family. She had imagined showing off the ring. She had imagined celebrating. What she had not imagined was complete chaos. The moment they arrived back in Willow Creek, Lily noticed the ring. The scream that followed could probably be heard across town. "OH MY GOD!" Emma immediately covered her ears. Lily was already running toward the house. "MOM!" Emma laughed helplessly. Alexander looked amused. "Is she always like this?" "Worse." "Good to know." Within seconds, Emma's mother appeared at the front door. One glance at Emma's hand. And tears immediately filled her eyes. "Oh, sweetheart." Emma smiled. The reality of it still felt surreal. She was engaged. Actually engaged. To Alexander. The thought still made her heart flutter. The next hour disappeared into hugs, tears, congratulations, and countless photographs. Lily took approximately two hundred pictures. Maybe more. At one point, Alexander quietly whispered: "I think your sister may be documenting our entire existence." Emma laughed. "You're only realizing that now?" Meanwhile, across the city, the Kingston family received the news. To Emma's surprise, Alexander's parents were thrilled. His mother immediately demanded a family dinner. His father opened an expensive bottle of champagne. For the first time in years, the entire family seemed genuinely happy. And Alexander couldn't stop smiling. Because the woman he loved had said yes. Three days later, wedding planning officially began. And immediately became a disaster. "What about roses?" Lily asked. "No." "What about peonies?" "No." "Sunflowers?" "No." Emma sighed. "We haven't even chosen a date." Alexander sat beside her looking completely overwhelmed. Board meetings. Corporate negotiations. Investor conferences. None of them had prepared him for wedding planning. "How are flowers this complicated?" Lily laughed. "Oh, you're adorable." Alexander frowned. "I don't like being called adorable." Emma kissed his cheek. "That's adorable." He groaned. The women laughed. Over the following weeks, plans slowly came together. A venue. A guest list. A dress. A suit. Music. Food. Flowers. Every decision seemed to create ten more decisions. Yet somehow, they enjoyed it. Because every choice brought them closer to their wedding day. Closer to forever. One evening, Emma and Alexander escaped the planning chaos and returned to their favorite place. The lake. Their lake. The place where so many important moments had happened. They sat together watching the sunset. The engagement ring sparkled softly on Emma's finger. Alexander gently took her hand. Still not quite believing it was real. "You know what's funny?" Emma smiled. "What?" "I used to think I had my entire life planned." She laughed softly. "How'd that work out?" Alexander looked at her. The woman who had completely changed everything. The woman who had turned one accidental coffee spill into the greatest love story of his life. "Terribly." Emma laughed. He smiled. "Thankfully." The evening breeze moved across the water. Comfortable silence settled between them. Then Emma rested her head on his shoulder. "Are you happy?" Alexander looked down at her. There was only one answer. "More than I've ever been." Emma smiled. Because she felt exactly the same. Neither knew what the future would bring. Challenges. Successes. Dreams. Children. A lifetime of memories. But they knew one thing with complete certainty. They would face it together. And that was enough.
