Chapter 16: A Dangerous Rumor

785 Words
Emma's phone began ringing before sunrise. At first, she ignored it. Then it rang again. And again. And again. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Half asleep, she reached for her phone. Twenty-three missed calls. Thirty-one messages. Hundreds of notifications. Her stomach immediately tightened. "What happened?" She opened the first message. It was from Sarah. Don't go online. Call me first. Emma's pulse quickened. She opened a news article anyway. And instantly wished she hadn't. A headline filled her screen. IS ALEXANDER KINGSTON'S GIRLFRIEND HIDING A SECRET? Below it was a photograph of Emma. Another headline followed. QUESTIONS SURROUND NURSE LINKED TO BUSINESS HEIR Her hands began to shake. "What?" She opened the article. The claims were ridiculous. Anonymous sources. False accusations. Rumors presented as facts. According to the article, Emma had deliberately pursued Alexander for his money. Another claimed she had manipulated their relationship. A third suggested she was using him for publicity. None of it was true. Not a single word. But the internet didn't seem to care. Three hours later, Emma sat in the hospital break room staring blankly at her coffee. The comments hurt the most. Not because strangers disliked her. Because strangers were judging a version of her that didn't exist. People who had never met her. Never spoken to her. Never known her. Yet somehow believed they knew everything. A chair scraped beside her. Sarah sat down. Without saying a word, she wrapped an arm around Emma's shoulders. "You okay?" Emma laughed softly. "No." Sarah nodded. "Fair." For several moments, neither spoke. Finally Emma sighed. "What if people believe it?" Sarah looked genuinely confused. "Believe what?" "The stories." Sarah snorted. "Emma." "What?" "Anyone who actually knows you would laugh at those articles." Despite everything, Emma smiled. A little. Meanwhile, Alexander was furious. Not at Emma. Never at Emma. At whoever had started the rumors. At the reporters. At the websites. At the people profiting from lies. He stormed into a meeting with his legal team. "Find the source." One attorney nodded. "We're trying." "No." Alexander's voice was cold. "Try harder." The room fell silent. Because everyone knew this wasn't about public relations anymore. This was personal. Very personal. That evening, Alexander drove to Willow Creek. He didn't call first. He didn't text. He simply showed up. Emma opened her front door and froze. "Alexander." Without a word, he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. Emma closed her eyes. The tension she'd been carrying all day immediately began to disappear. Neither spoke for several seconds. Neither needed to. Eventually, Alexander pulled back slightly. "Are you okay?" Emma smiled sadly. "I'm trying." His heart broke a little. Because she didn't deserve this. Not even a little. Later, they sat together on the porch. The evening air was cool. Quiet. Peaceful. A complete contrast to the chaos online. Emma stared out at the street. "I hate this." Alexander nodded. "I know." "I didn't ask for any of it." "I know." "I just wanted..." She stopped. "What?" Emma looked at him. A small smile appeared. "You." Alexander's chest tightened. Because that was exactly what he wanted too. Just her. No headlines. No cameras. No rumors. Just them. A few moments later, Alexander reached into his jacket pocket. Emma frowned. "What are you doing?" He pulled out his phone. Then handed it to her. On the screen was a draft statement. Emma began reading. Halfway through, her eyes widened. "Alexander." He remained quiet. The statement publicly defended her. Every accusation. Every rumor. Every lie. He wasn't protecting the company. He was protecting her. The statement ended with one sentence. Emma Brooks is one of the most honest, compassionate, and remarkable people I have ever known. I will not stand by while false stories are spread about her. Emma looked up. Speechless. "You're sure about this?" Alexander didn't hesitate. "Completely." The certainty in his voice nearly brought tears to her eyes. Because she knew exactly what this meant. People would talk. Investors would talk. The media would talk. Everyone would have an opinion. And he was doing it anyway. For her. The next morning, the statement was released. The reaction was immediate. News outlets picked it up. Social media exploded. Support poured in. The rumors didn't disappear overnight. But something changed. People saw Alexander standing beside Emma. Publicly. Proudly. Without hesitation. And suddenly the narrative shifted. For the first time, Emma felt like she wasn't facing the storm alone. Because she wasn't. Alexander was standing right beside her. And neither of them planned on letting go. But unknown to them, the person behind the rumors had just learned their plan had failed. And failure was making them desperate. Desperate people often made dangerous choices.
