Chapter 11: The Weekend Getaway

832 Words
Emma spent the entire week wondering where Alexander was taking her. Every time she asked, he refused to answer. Every. Single. Time. "It's a surprise." That was his favorite response. By Friday afternoon, she was officially annoyed. "You realize surprises are just secrets with better marketing." Alexander laughed through the phone. "I'll remember that." "I'm serious." "So am I." Emma smiled despite herself. "You're impossible." "Yet you're still coming." Unfortunately, he had a point. Saturday morning arrived with clear skies and warm sunshine. Emma stood outside her house with a small travel bag when a black SUV pulled into the driveway. Her heart immediately reacted. It always did. Alexander stepped out wearing dark jeans and a fitted navy sweater. Emma's breath caught for a second. She was becoming increasingly concerned about how handsome he was. It felt unfair. "Morning." His smile widened. "Morning." For a moment, neither moved. Then Lily appeared behind Emma. Of course she did. "Have fun!" Emma groaned. "Lily." "What?" She grinned. "Just saying." Alexander laughed. Which only encouraged her. Emma made a mental note to hide her sister when they returned. Three hours later, they arrived at a beautiful lakeside resort tucked between rolling hills and forests. Emma stared through the windshield. The water sparkled beneath the afternoon sun. Luxury cabins overlooked the lake. Flowers lined the pathways. The entire place looked magical. "Alexander." He smiled. "You like it?" "Like it?" Emma looked at him. "This place is beautiful." Something warm settled in his chest. Because making her smile was quickly becoming his favorite thing. After checking in, they spent the afternoon exploring. The resort was peaceful. Quiet. Far away from photographers and headlines. Exactly what they both needed. For the first time in weeks, neither worried about work. Or expectations. Or public attention. It was just them. Walking side by side through nature trails. Laughing. Talking. Being together. Simple. And perfect. As evening approached, they rented a small boat and drifted across the lake. The setting sun painted the water gold. Emma sat opposite Alexander, watching the reflection dance across the surface. "This was a good idea." Alexander smiled. "I'm glad." She looked around. "It feels different here." "Different how?" Emma thought about it. "Quiet." He nodded. "I needed quiet." Her eyes softened. "So did I." For a moment, neither spoke. The boat drifted gently. The water remained calm. Everything felt peaceful. Then Alexander looked at her. Really looked at her. And suddenly the world felt a little less calm. A little more dangerous. Because his feelings weren't hiding anymore. Neither were hers. Later that night, they sat beside an outdoor fire pit near the lake. The stars stretched endlessly overhead. Emma couldn't remember the last time she'd felt this relaxed. Alexander handed her a mug of hot chocolate. "Thank you." "You're welcome." Their fingers brushed briefly. A simple touch. Yet somehow it felt significant. Neither mentioned it. Neither pulled away too quickly. The silence that followed wasn't awkward. It was filled with things neither had said. Things both were beginning to feel. Finally, Alexander broke the silence. "Can I be honest?" Emma looked up. "Always." He stared into the fire for a moment. Then spoke. "Meeting you changed a lot for me." Her heart immediately accelerated. Alexander continued. "Before you, everything felt planned." His gaze lifted to hers. "Predictable." Emma couldn't look away. "You make things different." The honesty in his voice stole her breath. "You make me want things I wasn't thinking about before." For a moment, the world seemed to disappear. There was only Alexander. Only the firelight reflecting in his blue eyes. Only the way he looked at her. As though she mattered. As though she was important. As though she was the only person there. "Alexander..." Her voice was barely above a whisper. He moved slightly closer. Not enough to touch her. Just enough to change everything. "I know this is complicated." Emma swallowed. "Yeah." "I know our lives are different." "They are." "But every time I think about walking away..." He smiled softly. "I can't." The confession settled between them. Powerful. Honest. Real. Emma's heart felt completely unsteady. Because she felt exactly the same way. Every doubt. Every fear. Every concern. None of it changed one simple truth. She cared about him. Deeply. More deeply than she wanted to admit. And pretending otherwise was becoming impossible. Slowly, she smiled. A genuine smile. One meant only for him. "I can't either." Alexander stared at her. Neither moved. Neither spoke. The distance between them felt smaller than ever. Their eyes remained locked. The moment stretched. Longer. Longer. Then— A loud crash echoed from nearby. Both jumped. Emma burst out laughing. Alexander groaned. A raccoon had knocked over a trash bin. The perfect interruption. The tension broke instantly. Neither could stop laughing. Eventually, Alexander shook his head. "Apparently nature isn't a fan of romance." Emma laughed harder. And somehow, that made the moment even more perfect. Because it was real. Just like them.
