Chapter 7
The air in the private archive room had grown so thick it felt almost solid, heavy with the suffocating scent of aged leather, burning cedar, and the sharp, metallic electricity humming between them.
Kingsley did not step back. Instead, he closed the remaining fraction of distance, his broad frame caging Katherine against the cold mahogany edge of the table. The heat radiating from his chest pressed against her silk blouse, a searing contrast to the chill of the room. She could hear the heavy, uneven cadence of his breathing a ragged rhythm that completely betrayed the icy, untouchable corporate mask he wore for the public.
"You play a very dangerous game, Katherine," Kingsley murmured, his voice dropping into a low, rough vibration that rippled straight down her spine. His fingers shifted on the wood, his knuckles brushing the sensitive skin of her hip with a jolt of static friction.
Katherine didn't flinch. She tilted her chin up, her gaze locking onto his with unyielding defiance. Her pulse hammered a frantic, heavy drumbeat against her throat, yet her voice remained dangerously steady, cutting through the silence like broken glass. "Only when the stakes are real, Kingsley. You can fool the city with the wedding invitations, and you can keep Tiana blinded by her own reflection. But you can't hide the numbers from the person who wrote them."
A dark, dangerous flicker ignited in Kingsley’s eyes a mix of raw hunger and sudden, desperate panic. Without a word of warning, his hand left the table, his long fingers tangling firmly into the dark silk of her hair at the nape of her neck. He pulled her just close enough that his lips brushed the shell of her ear, warm and trembling against the cold air.
"You think this is about numbers?" he breathed, his voice a ragged whisper that sent a violent shiver cascading over her skin. "Tiana is a performance, Katherine. But you... you are the only real thing in this entire suffocating room."
His thumb traced the sharp curve of her cheekbone, lingering rough and possessive against her skin before his gaze dropped slowly to her lips. The space between them evaporated, the tension snapping like a taut wire under too much weight.
When the line between strategic deception and raw, unfiltered obsession finally breaks, who will pay the ultimate price for the truth?
