He was standing in the middle of a stone quarry. It was desolated. He didn’t understand how he came here and he doesn’t know why. He looked around. No vehicles could be seen in the vicinity. No one was around, not even a single breathable animal other than him. Maybe there wasn’t enough light to see anyone.
It was a huge quarry covering acres of land and more than four hundred feet high.
He knew he had been here before, but there was no point of him to be here now. The quarry has been shut down six months ago and no one would come here barring some people visit at the late hours of the evening for their drinking company. They drink their quota in silence and quietly exit the area. No one knows they were here unless anyone looks at the stream in the centre of the quarry and see the plastic bottles of liquor and mineral water floating.
The quarry was located more than hundred kilometers away from his home. He tried hard to remember how he ended up here, that too so early in the morning. The sun hasn’t risen yet and the environment was deadly silent. But he sensed his memory was blank, complete void. His heart beat faster. He spun around on one foot but no signs of life he could find.
He recalled that he visited this quarry almost seven months ago. It was when they decided to strike against the functioning of the quarry. It was becoming a threat to the thirty seven families living nearby. The day night strike went on for twenty three days and finally government ordered to shut the quarry down. He was there for the strike, on all twenty three days and nights leading the whole team. He was the face of the protest.
The quarry was owned by an ex-minister of SPI party, his rival.
Dawn was breaking and the first rays of the sun touched the earth. The weather was cold and a chill breeze passed through sending chills through his spine.
What am I doing here?
Then suddenly somewhere he heard a cry. He once again looked around but he couldn’t locate where the cry came from. He concentrated hard and again he heard the cry. He walked towards the direction of the cry. Two hundred meters away from him there was a small lake, almost a hundred meters wide but no one is sure of its depth. The lake was dangerous, unexpected tides and whirlpools and underwater currents occur every now and then.
He raced towards the lake and saw a hand of a person drowning in the lake. It was early in the morning and the water was freezing cold. He hesitated at the bank of the lake, unsure of what to do. He stepped into the lake but soon retracted because of the ice cold water. He knew he could do nothing. The hand he saw was almost in the midway of the river. If he dives into the water he would also drown as his body would become numb and he won’t be able to swim. He had to accept the bitter truth, he cannot save the person. The hand slowly went down under the water and a few bubbles surfaced. Who was that, he wouldn’t know.
That’s when the mobile screamed and Rudrachandran woke up startled. He was sweating profusely. Panicked, he looked around to see where he was. Thankfully he was home, in his own bed. It was a nightmare!
He knew who would be calling at this hour and yet he looked at the name of the person calling. Diana! His Diana, love of his life.
A fuzzy smile appeared on his face.
He picked up the call and a warm greeting welcomed him. “Good morning handsome.”
“Good morning.” He greeted back, tried to be cheerful.
But she could sense something is not right. His voice was clumsy, no passion in his greeting and was too much formal.
“You feel so disturbed. Didn’t you sleep well?” She didn’t hide her concern.
“Oh nothing. I am fine. I slept well. How was your sleep?” He pretended to be normal. I was having a nightmare!
“I couldn’t sleep. A handsome man came in my dreams and was trying to get cozy with me. He was trying to touch me improperly.” Her voice was luscious, she wanted his attention.
And she got it. He was all ears. “Who was that man? Where did he touch?” He went with the flow. He tried to be sultry but his voice turned out to be in a serious tone.
“His lips were all over me. He was trying to kiss me on my lips. He was a man who steals my dreams every night.” She was clearly blushing and her voice seductively intimidating.
He didn’t reply. He was still recovering from his nightmare.
She could definitely know his mood was off and she knew what could be the reason.
“Show me your ugly face.” She said in a childish tone and she waited for his response.
“Mmm…” He hooted like an owl. You called me a handsome man and now you say my face is ugly. But he liked whatever she called him. He enjoyed her teasing him with names.
Was that a yes or no, she didn’t know. But she cut the call and opened her w******p messenger. His name and number was at the top of the list. She opened his chat box and clicked on the video option.
A video call was initiated between them.
He attended, he had no other choice. She looked at his dull face, a fake smile fitted on his face to hide his nervousness.
“What happened, Rudra, why are you so cold and gloomy? Is it again one of your nightmares?” She asked in anxiety. She already knows about his nightmares.
“Yes.” He said in a low voice and shook his head. He wasn’t looking at her.
“What was this time?” She didn’t know how to comfort him. She was far away from him, some six hundred kilometers away. Or she could have hugged him and press his head against her bosom and let her fingers caress through his oily black hair. She knows that he always had some strange dreams. Someone crying for help! His dreams were almost the same but the situations changed.
He told her about his dream.
This one is new. She thought.
“Can’t you forget it now?” She asked.
“Yes Diana. Do you have any medicine?” He asked mischievously. I had worse nightmares and you know that. He doesn’t care too much about the dreams as it comes regularly. But his only problem was he wakes up startled as if he was really struggling in that situation for a decision. Usually after ten minutes he gets back to his normalcy and he forgets about the dream.
“I have a cure for your coldness. It will burn your arteries. Let the fire ignite in you.” She kept the mobile far from her body. Her soft voluptuous breasts were bare and visible. Her shapely carved upper body was positioned seductively. “I hope this will make your day.” She wetted her lips and a flash of luscious smile glittered between her lips.
His eyes widened with lust and a sultry smile beamed between his lips. His eyes ran all over her naked upper body as if measuring every inch of her intensely. The camera slowly rode down till her navel and abruptly stopped.
“Stop staring like that.” The focus now changed to her face. “That’s enough for today.” She bit her lower lips and then kissed on the screen.
