CHAPTER NINE The Gathering Storm The street lamps gave a soft glow to the streets of Rome as Leonardo found his way to the apartment of Isabella. Every detail of her message weighed in his mind: the scope of Matteo's betrayal, the very real danger that was growing around them and not just their fragile alliance but their very lives. He found her waiting in the dimly lit living room, eyes shadowed by exhaustion yet alight with a fierce determination that only served to make her more captivating. “We don’t have much time,” she said without preamble, her voice steady despite the tension thickening the air. “Matteo is playing a game far more dangerous than we realized. He’s not just trying to manipulate us,he’s trying to take everything.” Leonardo nodded, running a hand through his dark hair. "Francesca has always used him as her weapon. But if Matteo's trying to cut loose from her control, that means the stakes are higher than ever." Isabella's eyes hardened. “He warned me to think carefully. Said I'm the only one who can stop Francesca." Leonardo’s lips pressed into a thin line. “And you believe him?” She hesitated. “I don’t know what to believe anymore. But if there’s any truth in that, we need to act fast." Together, they pored over the files Luca had compiled in an attempt to put together a picture of alliances, betrayals, and secrets that spanned decades. Every revelation was a dagger, twisting the knife of their shared past. And with each passing hour, the line that separated enemies from allies became a little less defined, replaced by an overriding desperation to defend what was left. Outside, the city held its breath beneath the gathering storm, one that would rip through and tear everything asunder in its path.
