Gail was holding the baby, and Billy Jo had put her feet up on a stool where she sat in the easy chair in sweats and thick socks. When Mark walked out of the bedroom, she took in his face, which was now clean shaven.
“You shaved off the beard,” she said.
He walked over to her and leaned down, and she slid her hand over the smoothness of his cheek before he kissed her and pulled away, then walked over to Gail and took the baby from her. “Just wanted a clean start,” he said. “Man, she’s beautiful.”
The way he looked at their daughter, Billy Jo just knew he’d never let anything happen to her.
“So,” Gail said, “I just heard from Carmen that you paid a visit to two security guards at the hospital.”
