Chapter 5

923 Words
The next few days were an odd blend of professional and personal tension. Every time Tamara walked into the office, it felt like there was something in the air something charged, something unspoken. She had expected the corporate world to be demanding, but she hadn’t anticipated the emotional complexity that came with it. Lucas had been different after Emily’s visit. He was still cold, still distant, but there was a subtle shift in the way he interacted with Tamara. Gone were the sharp, dismissive tones. Instead, there was a wariness in his eyes—like he was trying to figure her out, or maybe even protect her from something. Tamara wasn’t sure, but she had noticed it. And it made everything feel even more complicated than it already was. Today was no different. Tamara had just finished reviewing a report when she felt the weight of someone’s gaze on her. She looked up, and there he was—Lucas, standing in the doorway of her office, watching her intently. “Tamara,” he said, his voice smooth, almost formal. “Can we talk?” Tamara set the report down, trying to suppress the flutter of nerves that rose in her chest. She nodded. “Sure. What’s up?” Lucas stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched between them, thick and uncomfortable, and Tamara couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking. He’d been distant since Emily’s visit, and the air between them had only become heavier. “I wanted to apologize for the other day,” Lucas finally said, his tone less commanding and more… human. “For the way Emily acted. I didn’t mean for you to feel… uncomfortable.” Tamara blinked in surprise. “It’s fine,” she replied quickly, though her mind was racing. “I didn’t let it get to me. I’m here to work, not to deal with office drama.” There was a flicker of something in Lucas’s eyes—appreciation, maybe? It was hard to tell. “Still, she’s… a bit much sometimes. I’ll handle her from now on.” Tamara raised an eyebrow, studying him. She’d never heard him speak so openly about someone like that. There was a vulnerability there, one she hadn’t expected. But then, just as quickly, his expression closed off, and he was back to being the CEO—cold, commanding, distant. “Anyway,” he continued, his voice returning to its usual detached tone, “I need you to prepare a report for the upcoming board meeting. It’s important, and I’d like it on my desk by the end of the day.” Tamara nodded, mentally noting the request. “Got it.” Lucas lingered for a moment longer, his gaze softening just a fraction. “I’ll see you later,” he said, before turning and walking out of the room, leaving Tamara with a mixture of confusion and curiosity. The rest of the day passed in a blur. Tamara spent hours working on the report, her mind constantly drifting back to the conversation with Lucas. What was that all about? She knew she wasn’t imagining the tension between them. Every time they exchanged a glance, every time they spoke, it felt like there was something more beneath the surface. But what? Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She glanced at the screen and saw Justin’s name flashing across it. Great, she thought, rolling her eyes before answering. “Tamara,” Justin’s voice came through, warm but unmistakably possessive. “I’m in town. I thought we could meet up for dinner.” Tamara’s heart sank. She hadn’t seen Justin in months, not since their messy breakup. She wasn’t sure she was ready to face him again, especially not with everything else going on in her life. “Justin, I’m… really busy,” she said, trying to sound firm but not cold. “I’ve got work to do.” There was a pause on the other end, and Tamara could almost feel the tension in the silence. “Come on, Tamara,” Justin urged. “It’ll be just like old times. You know we’re still friends.” She bit her lip, feeling torn. She wasn’t sure if meeting with him was a good idea. It could stir up feelings she wasn’t ready to deal with, and if Lucas was watching, it might complicate things even more. But then again, she didn’t owe Lucas anything. Right? “I’ll think about it,” Tamara said, her voice tentative. “But no promises.” After hanging up, Tamara stared at her phone for a moment, feeling the weight of the decision pressing on her. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts her complicated past with Justin, her growing feelings of unease around Lucas, and the persistent ache of wanting something more than this constant back-and-forth. Later that evening, she found herself standing at the window of her apartment, gazing out over the city. The lights below twinkled like stars, and for a moment, everything felt… distant. Like she was watching her life from a different perspective, as though she wasn’t really part of it anymore. What was she doing? She’d come so far, worked so hard, and now she was caught between two men two worlds that felt like they could never coexist. She wasn’t sure what she wanted, or even what was real anymore. All she knew was that things were changing, and she couldn’t stop it.
