14 JD and I swam to the dock when we heard car doors slam, but we remained in the water. My hands and arms shook so badly I could barely hang on to the edge. “Stay here,” JD whispered, and swam back under the pier and out the other side. He pulled himself out of the water in the disgustingly easy manner of a sixteen-year-old (which he most certainly was not), but stayed belly to the ground. Then he slid back in the water and returned to me. He didn’t whisper, but his voice was still low. “They’re gone. I watched them drive away. The only time anyone else ever uses that access road is to get the dumpsters. You okay?” I chose not to answer.
