Xiao Ran was summoned by the police—suspected of endangering public safety. But during questioning, her words were completely incoherent. She kept rambling about “Yin-Yang twins,” “I’m the real superstar,” and “They’re trying to hurt me,” things that made no sense at all. A medical evaluation confirmed she was mentally unstable. I had her scent to the best psychiatric hospital in the city. State-of-the-art facilities. The most attentive care. The hospital director took my hand and sighed in admiration, “Not only are you beautiful, but you’re kindhearted too!” I gave a soft sigh. “Well, she is my sister after all.” The director pulled out a notebook from his pocket. “I’m such a fan. Would you mind signing an autograph for me?” I smiled, took the notebook, and signed my name in fluid strokes— Xiao Ran. No matter how packed my schedule was, I always made time each month to visit both my mother in the hospital and my sister at the psychiatric clinic. One day, in Mom’s hospital room, I glanced at a news article on my phone and couldn’t help but laugh. “Mom, look,” I said, holding the phone up to her face. “I’ve just been named Most Inspirational Actress of the Year.” “I became a big star, just like you wanted.” “Are you proud of me?” —— Leaving her room, I put on my sunglasses and a baseball cap, fully masked up, before stepping into the elevator. There was a couple inside, each carrying a child in their arms. The children looked identical. I couldn’t help smiling. “Are they twins?” The woman beamed. “Yes, they’re twins.” “Our eldest is sick, so we brought him in for a checkup.” I trailed behind them as we exited the hospital. Soon, my agent arrived to pick me up, and we headed off to the store. At a red light, I spotted the couple again. They were standing by the roadside, being hassled by an old Taoist priest. I rolled down the window, turned my head to watch. “Yin-Yang twins!” the priest shouted. Unbelievable—I’ve met two pairs of Yin-Yang twins in this lifetime. What a miracle!” The woman was clearly annoyed. “Get lost, we’ve got somewhere to be!” The priest grabbed her arm. “If you sacrifice one, the other will be blessed with the fate of a celestial child!” She yanked her arm back and snapped, “Don’t talk nonsense!” “Both of my children are treasures. I don’t need them to be celestial. I just want them safe and sound.” The man stepped forward to shield his wife and kids, glaring at the priest. “Touch them again, and I’ll call the police.” The old priest pouted, finally stepping aside reluctantly. Still muttering as he left: “Born of yin and yang... one wanes, the other thrives... The young child drowns in the mud, the young child ascends to heaven... ha… ha… ha…” I watched the family disappear around the corner. Then turned my gaze back to the road. My agent glanced at me. “Are you alright?” I nodded, calm. “I’m fine. Let’s go.”
