Episode 16: The Invisible Chain
Ella didn’t leave.
Not because she wanted to stay.
But because somewhere between fear and uncertainty, she realized the world outside the Vale mansion was no longer safer than the one inside it.
The black car remained parked near the gates as dawn slowly spread across the sky. Damien stood only a few feet away from her, his expression unreadable as always, but there was tension hidden beneath the calm surface he worked so hard to maintain.
Ella tightened her grip around the handle of her suitcase.
“If I leave now,” she asked quietly, “will they come after me?”
Damien didn’t answer immediately.
That alone terrified her.
Finally, he said, “Yes.”
The honesty in his voice made her chest tighten.
Not hesitation. Not manipulation. Just truth.
Ella looked past him toward the open gates. Freedom stood right there in front of her, waiting. A few more steps and she could disappear from the mansion, from the contract, from Damien’s dangerous world.
But deep down, she already knew it wouldn’t end there.
Victor Hale knew her face now. He knew her connection to Damien. And people like Victor didn’t simply let useful pieces walk away.
“I hate this,” Ella whispered.
Damien lowered his gaze briefly. “I know.”
For the first time since meeting him, she heard exhaustion in his voice.
Not coldness. Not authority. Just exhaustion.
Slowly, Ella turned away from the gates.
Damien said nothing as she walked back toward the mansion beside him. The silence between them felt different now. Less hostile. More uncertain.
Inside, the mansion staff pretended not to notice the tension. Mrs. Carter greeted Ella softly, concern visible in her eyes.
“Would you like breakfast, Miss Ella?”
Ella forced a small smile. “Maybe later.”
She headed upstairs, but before entering her room, Damien spoke.
“There’s something you need to understand.”
Ella turned back.
“This situation will get worse before it gets better.”
“That’s comforting,” she replied bitterly.
Damien ignored the sarcasm.
“Victor doesn’t attack people emotionally. He studies them first.”
Ella frowned slightly. “How do you know that?”
A shadow crossed Damien’s face.
“Because I taught him how.”
The answer sent a chill through her.
Before she could ask more, Damien walked away.
Ella stared after him for a long moment.
Every answer she received only created more questions.
And somehow, despite everything, she was beginning to realize something dangerous.
The more she learned about Damien Vale…
The less she wanted to leave him.
