Even though she was really sleepy by the time that Luke dropped her off outside her small apartment, Veena couldn't easily fall asleep. Her thoughts were filled with images of Luke; his face when he was being serious, his smiles, and the way he wrinkled his nose.
The same thing was happening with Luke, feeling totally happy that he got the chance to spend some meaningful moments with her. Appreciating her honesty and realizing how beautiful both her heart and soul were, was keeping him up all night.
“Good morning, Ms. Ami!”
Ms. Ami didn't greet her back, but she threw a meaningful smile at her. She looked as if she was waiting for Veena to tell her about what happened last night.
Veena, however, went on to her morning routine at the library. She didn't want to initiate the talk about her date with Luke, and she decided to just wait until Ms. Ami asked her.
Around eleven in the morning, Ms. Ami was surprised to receive a delivery of food from a very famous Thai restaurant in the area. She thought that the delivery man had made a mistake because she didn't order any, but the delivery man insisted that it was for her.
“Ma'am, maybe someone else ordered this food for you because it's already been paid,” the delivery man told her.
“Strange,” she hissed. “Who could that be?”
“Let me check the details on the application,” he replied, navigating the app on his phone.
“It says here that a certain Luke Walters ordered these and had them delivered in this address,” he stated.
“Yeah, I know him. Is there a way that you can tell him that I appreciate his gesture?”
“Since you told me that you actually know, I suggest that it will be much better if you call him up,” he cited, sounding assertive but not totally irritating.
“I guess you are right! Thank you!”
Obviously, the food was not just for her. Assuming that Luke really wanted to send them for Veena, she immediately walked towards her. Veena was actually working on the shelves, dusting them off and organizing the books.
“Hey pretty woman!” she growled, keeping a very low volume.
Veena's body jerked, surprised by the sudden voice that appeared behind her. “God, Ms. Ami, I am going to have a little heart attack!” she exclaimed, complaining about how heart skipped a beat.
“Your handsome suitor got you some food, and I think they are very delicious,” she uttered.
“Is he here?” she excitedly asked, gazing around the area.
“Unfortunately, he is not here. He had someone deliver your lunch.”
“I didn't ask him to,” he quickly responded.
“Obviously, he wanted to surprise you. Isn't that so sweet of him?”
“Should I call him up and thank him?”
“Of course! Unless you just want to eat them all without even bothering to thank the one that sent those delectable food to you.”
“I didn't get his number,” she replied, frowning.
“What? I thought you worked for him?”
“Yeah, but someone else acts as a middle man between him and me,” she explained.
“Come on, let's dig in!” Ms. Ami suggested, asking her to get her hands off the shelves and enjoy a sumptuous lunch.
“I will just leave a note for him on Thursday,” she said.
“Trust me, if he really wants to pursue you, he'd probably visit you here before Thursday.”
“I don't think so, he's probably on another humanitarian mission in the countryside.”
“Wow, is that what he does?” impressed, Ms. Ami asked.
“That's what he told me.”
“What else did he tell you about himself?”
“Are you asking me about how our dinner went last night?”
“I have been waiting for you to tell me, but I think you didn't want to share it with me, though.”
“I was waiting for you to ask,” she sarcastically narrated. “I tried to confront him and told him that he'd probably want to win me over so I would agree to sleep with him.”
Ms. Ami, who was to swallow a piece of potato wedge, almost choked. “Are you for real? Why did you do that!”
“Because you said that there were men out there who have such mentalities!”
“But I didn't advise you to confront him, you should have studied his personality instead and see if he would be one of those guys,” she explained, raising an eyebrow as a sign of frustration. “You are unbelievable, Veena. Did he get mad?’
“At first, but he told me that he totally understood why I felt that way,” she softly uttered.
“Well, thanks for his understanding, but if it was someone else, he would definitely walk out from that scene.”
“I am just trying to be assertive,” she uttered.
“Well, you need to be careful with your choices of words! Did you tell him that I actually told you about it?”
“Yes, I did.”
“He's mad at me, isn't he?’
“No, Ms. Ami, he knows that you are very protective of me.”
“I can't believe you would do such things on a first date, Veena. I find it a little too funny, though. At least you gave him the impression that you are not like any other girls out there.”
In the middle of their conversation, the library's phone rang. Ms. Ami quickly ran towards it and picked it up.
“City Library, good morning!”
“Hi, is this Ms. Ami?”
“Yes, speaking. May I know who's on the line?”
“Hi, this is Luke, I just want to know if you've received the food that I ordered for you and for Veena?”
“Hey, Luke!” she excitedly said, looking at Veena's direction, and signaling to her that it was Luke that she was talking with over the phone. “Thank you, actually we are eating right now. They are very delicious! Should I get Veena for you?”
“Uhm, actually, is that okay?”
“Wait a sec, I'll call her for you.”
“Thank you, Ms. Ami. I appreciate it “
She delicately placed the phone on the table and headed towards Veena. “He wants to speak to you. Hurry!”
Veena got up, and then she quickly picked up the phone. “Hello,” she started.
“Hi, I was actually waiting for you to call me but I realized that I didn't give you my number and you didn't give yours.”
“Yeah, I was trying to figure out how I could reach you. Well, thank you, Luke!”
“Did you like the food?”
“Of course,” she briefly answered.
“Look, I am thinking of asking you out on a day trip outside Bangkok on Saturday, do you think you can go?”
“Oh, didn't I tell you about my weekend-classes? I am sorry, Luke, as much as I want to go with you, but my weekend is definitely for my schooling.”
“Oh, I see. Let me think of something else, how about tomorrow?”
“I'm scheduled to clean your apartment tomorrow, right? Then Ms. Ami will be needing me here after lunch, so I don't think it's possible.”
“Too bad,” he sadly muttered. “Is there no one else to take your shift at the library tomorrow?”
“I am afraid that there is none, Luke. I am really sorry,” she sweetly narrated.
“Well, it's fine! But please don't stop me if I want to see you there at the library!”
“I am just here most of the time, and you are also aware of my schedule here.”
“I have been missing you since I dropped you off last night, Veena. Can I see you tonight?”
“I can't stay up late tonight, Luke,” she answered.
“Please let me see you tonight,” he begged, sounding a little desperate already.
“Okay, I will see you tonight,” she mouthed.
“I'll be waiting for you outside the library.”
“I'll see you later, then. Goodbye, Luke!”
