48 Evers Under a pastel blue sky, Evers and Mary Catherine walked the narrow, twisting streets to the Vatican. The sun had begun to lift the dew off the cramped gardens and an elderly lady leaned out of her window to water her potted flowers with a sprinkling can. From a distance the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest cathedral in the world, loomed majestically in front of them, attesting to the Church’s might and durability throughout the ages. One glance at the Church sent Evers’ heart pounding. Shops lined the way to the square, peddling scapulars, rosaries, holy cards, statues of the pope and saints, and other religious artifacts.
