82 Evers Evers was at the mouth of his driveway before he saw the car idling in front of his home. He hit the brakes, sending the pickup into a spin, then skidding backward up the curb, the right fender bouncing and crunching lightly off the masonry gate pillar. How the hell could they have beat him home? Evers floored the gas petal, aimlessly spinning the rear tires until he let up on the gas, let his wheels make contact with the pavement and gently surge forward.
