Elena POV
"Such a brat!" I spat out as I walked past him in the hallway.
He paused to glare at me and then walked away.
I rolled my eyes at him, how can someone this handsome be this rude.
Yes, he is fine and screams money and luxury. I mean his watch would literally cover my mum's health care and then half of my tuition, but he's a pain in the ass.
I could see how disgusted he was by me.
How he looked at me with so much anger because he thinks I am unfit to be the one carrying his child.
Well, I too think he is unfit to be the father of the child I am going to carry.
My phone's ringtone disrupted my train of thought.
It's my mum.
My heart immediately sinks into my stomach. She is meant to be sleeping.
"Hi, Mum, I thought…"
"Elena, it's me, her doctor. She was rushed here some minutes ago. She passed out in front of her house."
"Okay, I would be on my way… I—"
As soon as I cut the call, I board a taxi to the hospital.
I can feel my heart getting heavier and heavier, my world spinning around me.
What happened?
Did I waste time.
A few minutes ago she was fine.
She said she was going to sleep.
What if she does not wake up?
What if…
Oh, Lord, please, I plead, tears rolling down my cheeks as I clasp my shaky hands together, praying to God.
As soon as I get to her room, I heave a deep sigh, looking at her as the doctor examines her.
She is fine.
She is breathing well and responding to their treatment.
As soon as the nurse leaves, I walk towards her, taking her hands.
"Mum, I…"
"You lied," she said as she glared at me with pure hatred in her eyes.
I blink. "What?"
"You lied to me, Elena. You said I was getting better. You told me that I would be fine."
I open my mouth to say something, to tell her the reason why I did it. That it was just to make her happy.
But deep down I know she would never see it from my perspective.
I hold her hands lightly and state the only thing that made me lie to her. "I wanted you to be happy. It's been three years since you found out about this cancer and you have never smiled, Mum. You stare into space and then cry. You have never laughed, even when a video is funny. I… I just wanted you to be happy, Mum."
"At what cost?" she asks me, her voice trembling.
She looks down at herself and then at me. "Do you think lying would make me happy. You lied, and guess what?" She pauses.
When I don't answer, she squeezes my hands so tight. "I passed out at home. Whether you like it or not, I have cancer and it's here to stay. The least you can do is be a truthful daughter, stay by my side, and make peace with my death. Not lie, Elena. Lying does not solve the problem."
I know.
I know lying would never solve the problem, but I wished it would.
"I'm sorry, Mom," I apologize as I close my eyes and pray.
That I get pregnant.
Even if it means it being that jerk.
One week later.
9:40 am. I have been staring at the clock for as long as I can.
Waiting for it to get to 10.
I already have everything with me.
A lunch box packed with food and family photos for my mum.
I would stop by the bar to take permission.
And then go straight to the hospital.
I close my eyes once more, wishing that God would hear me and make me pregnant.
I need my mum with me.
I am just too young to be an orphan, I am already lonely as it is, and I would be so lonely without my mum.
I can't imagine a life without her in it.
As soon as it gets to 10 am, I board a taxi and tick off everything on my to-do list before visiting the hospital.
The receptionist welcomes me with a warm smile and asks me to meet Dr. Cruz.
The tiles feel cold, even my feet are almost numb from the anxiety building within me.
What if I don't get pregnant.
Then I would lose my mum.
But if I get pregnant, would that jerk be willing to accept it without any problem.
I just want to carry the child and give her or him back to him and move on.
"You are late."
His voice stops my train of thought.
I turn back to meet him standing directly behind me, a smirk on his face.
He looks more… more presentable this time, his cinnamon scent mixed with his aftershave filling my nostrils.
I roll my eyes immediately. "And I don't see how that is your business."
"It's mine, Elena. Because you are late and I am someone whose time is precious."
I shrug. "It's not my fault that you have such a demanding life. Some people just live normal lives and don't time-block every single moment of their lives. I would be miserable living your life."
He pauses, nods his head slowly, and looks at his Rolex wristwatch before looking at me. "At least I don't have to get pregnant to have money."
Before I can say anything, he walks past me, a smug smile on his face. "Walk. Dr. Cruz is waiting."
Argh!
This man is really annoying.
A total jerk.
He hasn't changed.
When I get to Dr. Cruz's office he is already sitting there, with a smile.
Like he has done something good for the world, when he literally gave me the sperm of this jerk instead of the loving couple I would have helped.
I take a seat far from him and his intimidating presence.
"Let's get started and get this done with," he says, sitting up right.
Dr. Cruz smiles at him and then at me.
"Okay, so do you have anything to say to each other. Have you made any decisions?"
"No. We are waiting for the results, then we'll know what to do with ourselves," he replies.
Dr. Cruz looks at me, waiting for my answer. I shook my head slowly. "Me too."
The nurse walks in and asks me to follow her outside, where she takes my blood.
I sit in the room, Dr. Cruz's whole attention is on the paper before him, Derek seems to have his whole attention buried in his phone, while I count my fingers again and again.
This moment feels like a precious one to me.
Like I am in some competition and the prize would be my life.
As soon as the nurse walks in and hands the result to the doctor.
I close my eyes, not wanting to see their faces if it turns out false.
I would just bend my head and walk away in shame.
Dr. Cruz looks at me with a smile. "Congratulations, Elena, you are pregnant."
I nod slowly.
Not happy.
My eyes land on Derek's face. His jaw tightens, I can see his vein throbbing, he is gripping the armrest hard and tight.
It's clear he does not want the baby.
And while I want the money, I could give him an alternative.
He has money.
Surely seven thousand dollars would not be too much for him.
I turn to him, clearing my throat. "If you don't want the baby, it's fine. I would remove it, and you would pay me the seven thousand dollars I asked for earlier on."
He does not respond.
Not a word.
Like he had not heard what I am saying.
"Can you hear me?" I ask.
Still no reply.
He turns to Doctor Cruz and shakes Doctor Cruz's hand. "Thank you for what you have done."
And then turns to me, handing me a card. "That is my number. You can call it anytime, but for necessary things only. You need to fix your hair — the type and color. Last week you had pink hair and now blue. Choose one."
I blink twice.
"You don't want me to take it out?" I ask.
He offers his hand for me to take and turns to me. "No. You are pregnant with my baby. It's mine and we are keeping it."
This seems so untrue.
He seems so adamant about the baby, not wanting the baby a week ago.
Why on earth does he now want the baby?
