Power in the Shadow of Passion

737 Words
I felt the atmosphere in the room grow even heavier as the guard returned and whispered something in Kailin’s ear. His face remained impassive, but his hand on my waist tensed so much that I was certain it would leave not just a bruise but a masterpiece. Kailin lifted his gaze to the three men before us, his eyes darkening like a storm ready to swallow everything in its path. – You played for stakes that were far too high. And now you’ve lost. – This is a misunderstanding! – the leader blurted out, jumping from his seat. – We just wanted to discuss the deal! – Yes, discuss, – added the second man, avoiding Kailin’s gaze. – There’s nothing illegal here! The third man, less confident, almost whispered: – We didn’t mean… it’s just business. Kailin leaned back lazily in his chair, his hand still resting on my waist as if to remind everyone in the room that I belonged to him in this moment. – Business? – he said, his voice soft but carrying the edge of a knife. – You called this business? I wonder, at what point in your "business" did you plan to destroy me? The three exchanged glances, their faces growing even paler. – We… we don’t know what you’re talking about, – the leader attempted a smile, but it came out pitiful. Still sitting next to Kailin, I couldn’t hold back a sarcastic smirk. – Really? Maybe you’d like to reread the contract? Oh, I’m sorry, you didn’t have time for that, too busy making plans. – You keep quiet! – the leader snapped at me, his voice trembling. That was a mistake. Kailin’s hand tightened abruptly on my waist, his eyes flashing like a predator about to pounce on its prey. – I wouldn’t recommend raising your voice to her, – he said, his voice icy. – She has more right to speak here than you do. I felt the room freeze. The leader stepped back, and the other two nervously shifted in their seats. At that moment, the door opened, and two more guards entered. They stopped by the entrance, waiting for orders. Kailin gestured for them to approach. – Take them, – he said, inclining his head slightly. – I want an explanation. But not here. – You can’t do this to us! – the leader exclaimed, his voice nearly hysterical. – We’re partners! – No, – Kailin replied, his voice calm. – You’re a mistake. The guards stepped forward, each grabbing one of the men by the elbow, and I watched as their confidence evaporated. They tried to resist, to shout, but it was all in vain. When the door closed behind them, I felt the tension in the room ease slightly. But Kailin’s hand remained on my waist. I turned to meet his gaze. – I think our game is over, – I said, trying to sound light. His eyes studied me intently, as if he were trying to unravel something I wasn’t planning to reveal. – Are you sure? – his voice was quieter now, but there was a hint of menace in it. – I need to get back to my friends, – I smiled, rising from his lap. – And I hope this little performance won’t bring me any trouble. He stood as well, his movements smooth but filled with power. He stepped closer, so close that only a few centimeters separated us. – You’re too bold, fox, – he said, his voice low, almost a whisper. – It’s admirable… and infuriating. I held his gaze, refusing to flinch. – And you’re too sure of yourself. It’s attractive… and dangerous. He smiled, but it wasn’t a warm smile. It was the smile of a predator who saw something unusual in its prey. – I hope we meet again, – he said, stepping back. – You leave too many questions unanswered. – And sometimes, questions are more useful than answers, – I replied, turning away, feeling his gaze on my back. – You’re playing a dangerous game, – his voice was quiet, almost a whisper, but every word wove an invisible web. – Remember, Selina, everything that falls into my hands stays there until the end. I looked at him, trying to hide my fear. But my heart, betraying me with its loud, rapid beats, revealed far more than I wanted it to.
