Web of Betrayal

The music shifted to "The Purge – Demetrius X," adding to the tension of the moment. My body swayed to the rhythm, blending in to avoid attracting attention, but my mind was working at full speed. I stepped back, pretending I had ended up in the wrong place by mistake, and headed back. I wanted to go back to them, but my mind kept replaying the details. – Selina! – a voice called out behind me. I turned to see Elian. His perpetual lightheartedness shone in his gaze and movements, as if his mere presence could calm the whole world. – And here’s the birthday girl, – he grinned, scanning me from head to toe. – How’s it going? Are you having fun? – It’s going well, – I replied with a small smirk. – And you? Found something to keep your crazy mind busy? – Oh, you know me, – he said, stepping closer. – Inspiration is everywhere here. But listen, I have a friend. We’re hanging out upstairs, and I thought, why don’t you and the girls join us? Let’s celebrate your birthday properly. – A friend? – I asked, narrowing my eyes. – Yes, yes, don’t look at me like that. He’s fine. He doesn’t bite. I couldn’t hold back a smile and glanced at my friends. They immediately perked up, ready for a new adventure. It seemed we had no objections. We approached the stairs. At the base stood a stoic security guard, a sturdy man with an impassive face. I met his gaze, and he nodded slightly, as if assessing us. Elian muttered a few words, and the guard stepped aside, letting us pass. The atmosphere on the second floor was different. Quieter, calmer, as though it wasn’t part of the club but an entirely separate world. My heart started beating faster, as if it knew I was about to encounter something new. When we entered the VIP lounge, I glanced around. The decor was sophisticated yet almost empty. My eyes accidentally caught a figure in the dim light. A man sat, leaning back in his chair. His face was illuminated by soft neon lights. And then our eyes met. It was like a jolt of electricity. His gaze was dark, deep, and probing, as if he could see straight through me, delving into my most private thoughts. I felt my inner voice freeze, yielding to a strange flutter inside. Time seemed to stop. I couldn’t look away, but I finally forced myself to, feeling a tremor within. This man… Something about him was both magnetic and unnerving. – Hey, what’s up? – Elian’s voice yanked me out of my thoughts. – Nothing, – I replied, turning back to him with a faint smile. He led us to a table where another man was seated. It must have been his friend. I settled into a chair, but the feeling of being watched didn’t fade. I knew that fleeting glance wasn’t accidental. As we sat at the table, I finally allowed myself to relax—or at least to appear as though I had. Elian introduced us to his friend, who turned out to be friendly, with an easygoing smile. He asked questions, but I felt that behind each one lay a deeper motive. This wasn’t mere polite curiosity; he seemed to be studying me, gauging my sincerity. I answered briefly, with a hint of playfulness. The second law of power came to mind: “Conceal your intentions.” Let them guess who I was and what I was doing here. But even as I spoke with Elian’s friend, I felt another gaze. Heavy and piercing. It came from the other side of the room, where the man whose silhouette I’d noticed earlier was sitting. His eyes, like an invisible thread, brushed against me again the moment I glanced up. At that moment, a security guard approached the table. His voice was steady, with an air of importance. – The gentleman upstairs requests your presence. Elian looked surprised but then broke into a broad grin. – Well, Selina, looks like you’re the star of the night. I nodded, trying to understand why this "gentleman" wanted my company. Smiling at my friends, who were ready to toss in their comments, I beat them to it. – Let’s go then. We shouldn’t keep him waiting. We climbed higher, to the most secluded part of the club. Here, luxury reigned without ostentation—deep armchairs, soft lighting, a subdued atmosphere. I felt a slight pressure in my chest, as though I already knew something significant was about to happen. He sat in the corner, lounging on a couch, slightly reclined. The man whose gaze I had met before now stood before me in full view. His aura was a mix of strength, confidence, and an undercurrent of danger. – Selina, – I introduced myself first, intentionally soft but with enough assertiveness not to let him feel superior. “Never outshine the master,” the first law of power reminded me. He inclined his head slightly in acknowledgment. – Kailin, – he replied briefly.I took a seat across from him, feeling his gaze continue to study me. This conversation would be a delicate dance—I could feel it from the very beginning. – Rarely do the women here pique my interest, – his voice was steady, almost cold. – Most of them prefer a different way to get attention. – Then maybe you’re surrounded by the wrong people, – I replied with a slight smile, but my tone was deliberately sharp. – Or perhaps you’re simply not interested in those who think beyond the obvious. His gaze grew more focused. I caught a flicker of curiosity. – Are you saying you think beyond the obvious? – his question carried a hint of mockery. – Perhaps. But I’m not here to convince you of that. Although… – I allowed a short pause, giving him time to think. – It wouldn’t hurt for you to give me a chance to prove it. He tilted his head slightly but didn’t respond immediately. I knew the importance of holding the silence, letting him take the next step. “Always make others act first,” I reminded myself. – Would you like to accompany me on one of my deals? – his tone softened, but the subtle mockery remained. – Do you think you’re worthy of it? – What if I told you that most of the people you’ve chosen before didn’t even know what they wanted? – I leaned back in my chair, projecting an air of calm. – But I do. – And what is that? – he asked, raising an eyebrow slightly. – Respect, – I met his gaze, making it clear that the word held far more weight for me than mere sound. He remained silent. The quiet was nearly unbearable, but I knew moments like this demanded self-control. I allowed myself to relax a little, waiting for him to speak again. His gaze grew heavier, as though he was trying to delve deeper than I was willing to let him. A faint smirk touched his lips, carrying both irony and interest. – Selina, – he began, slowly pronouncing my name as though testing its flavor. – You’re too clever for your age. How old are you? His question hung in the air like a taut string. I knew he was probing, searching for a vulnerability to understand who I was and why I was here. “Never reveal everything at once,” I reminded myself. I let a faint smile soften my face to disarm him. – Age is relative, isn’t it? Some waste their years, while others make use of every moment. His eyes narrowed slightly, clearly not expecting such a response. I turned away, pretending to be more interested in the room’s ambiance. The soft light, the distant hum of voices, and the melody playing now—“Chills (Dark Version) – Mickey Valen & Joey Myron.” – You avoided the question, – he noted, his voice lower. I turned back to him, raising my glass to take a sip. – And you asked a question that was too direct. That’s not fair, don’t you think? – I’m not used to being cornered, – his gaze turned colder, though I detected a faint glimmer of approval. – Then consider it a useful experience, – I set the glass on the table. – Sometimes, it’s worth allowing a little chaos. That’s what makes life interesting, after all. He paused for a moment, seemingly contemplating my words. I felt the tension between us deepen, but it wasn’t the kind that bred fear. It was something else—something that simultaneously alarmed and intrigued me. – I like you, Selina, – he finally said. – But I’m still curious: who are you, really? Before I could respond, a security guard entered the room, interrupting our conversation. His quiet voice reached Kailin: – Sir, everything is ready. Kailin cast me one last glance, filled with veiled interest, then rose without a word of farewell. I remained seated, feeling my thoughts leap from one detail to another. He was too dangerous, too enigmatic. And I knew this was only the first of many questions I’d have to sidestep. When I took another sip of my cocktail, the music in the room changed. Now “Lights Out – Mass of Man, GAWNE, Vin Jay” played, its hard rhythm perfectly matching the moment’s tension. Kailin stopped near the guard, exchanging a few quiet words with him. I watched him from the corner of my eye, pretending to be preoccupied with my drink, but it was hard to ignore his presence. Something about him kept me on edge, as if he was both a predator and a riddle. He turned to me, his gaze locking onto mine once more. – Selina, – he said, his voice calm but carrying an inflection that left no room for argument. – I have a proposal. I raised an eyebrow, setting my glass down. – I usually prefer to hear the details before agreeing. The corners of his lips twitched slightly, as though I had surprised him again. – It’s not a proposal in the traditional sense, – he continued. – I’m attending a meeting, and I need someone to accompany me. – And you chose me? – I allowed myself a smirk. – A rather strange choice for someone who doesn’t even know my age. – Sometimes, you don’t need to know everything to make decisions, – he tilted his head slightly. – I trust your mind enough. His words caught me off guard. It was both a compliment and a challenge, and I couldn’t help but feel my interest in this game grow. – And why do you need a companion? – I asked, trying not to reveal my growing curiosity. – To show I’m not alone, – he replied, steel laced in his voice. – Such things matter sometimes, especially when someone intends to deceive you. I fell silent, processing his words. He didn’t know I had overheard the conversation downstairs, but I was beginning to understand how crucial this was to him—perhaps even more than he was willing to admit. – Fine, – I said finally, rising from my seat. – But let me warn you, if you expect me to just sit and smile, you’ve picked the wrong girl. His eyes gleamed, and he tilted his head slightly, signaling that he understood my warning. – That’s even better. He offered his hand, and after a brief hesitation, I accepted it. We headed toward the VIP lounge’s exit. My heart beat faster, but I maintained an outward calm. This encounter could be the key to everything—or the beginning of something far more dangerous.
