CHAPTER FOUR
Ashley struggled to keep from fidgeting as she watched Ted Rayburn, the head of the TBI’s human resources department, peck her answer to his most recent question into the laptop lodged on the cherry conference table between them. It seemed clear by his lack of speed that the man was accustomed to having someone else do his typing for him. She wondered why the short, round man didn’t just jot her replies down by hand and have them entered into the computer after she left. Or better yet, he could just play the video footage she knew was being captured by the camera housed in the room’s upper right corner.
When she’d arrived at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s satellite office in Briarwood that morning, Ashley had expected to meet with the deputy director, Brenda Huddles
