Chapter Three

910 Words
After what seemed like more than half of a day, we got to Masetown. How I knew? Thanks to the blaring horns and loud noises from the bars, I knew we had arrived. Though it was a small town, it was quite lively and not as dull as I had expected. We went down a lonely street and finally reached Nana’s house. It wasn’t quite far from the capital. The family house was in the middle of a forest, hence the bushes that surrounded the area. My dad was quiet enough not to horn, we crept in quietly into the house. We sighted Nana in the kitchen. My dad walked up to her and tapped her from behind. As she turned, surprised at the sight of the people before her. “Whendidyougethere?” she screamed with some excitement in her voice. She covered her mouth while still trying to absorb the surprise. “ Well, we got here not long ago, ” my dad said, interrupting her. “ That isn't even the best part mom. You won't even believe it” he said. While in her long nightie ,she still looked so good. Nana always looked beautiful in everything she wore. This sickness really had nothing on her. “You know I’m bad at guessing. So just go ahead and tell me or I’ll die out of curiosity.” she said while holding onto me in a tight hug. Nana’s hugs were hard to come out of. This wasn’t an exception. “ We are moving in with you! ” my dad shouted with so much cheer. I could see the genuine happiness in his eyes. It made me remember my own mother, how I was always so excited to get home from school just to see her. Thanks to the cold hands of death, she was no more. The day of the accident still lingered in my mind. If only she hadn’t rushed to come pick me up from school, she would still be alive. She would have been with us, here in Masetown. “I can’t believe this” Nana burst out while rushing out to confirm our surprise. With her hands on her waist, she shook her with so much energy while looking at the van with all our boxes in it. We went ahead to the car and started offloading our boxes. The family house was quite large with up to 4 bedrooms, so it was comfortable. Nana helped me take a few boxes to my room. As I entered the room, the scent of the air freshener settled into my nose. My room was still the same as I had left it. The posters all over the walls and the flower aesthetic I created, are still intact. Fortunately, the room had been cleaned earlier. Nana is always doing the most, even when she’s not feeling so good. I quickly stuffed all my boxes in the room and went down to give my dad a hand. The man had already finished packing out the other boxes from the car. Call him a muscleman if you can. Nana, my dad and I started arranging our stuff. We set up some of the furniture we had packed in Detroit. My dad’s most cherished artworks didn’t miss out on this move. He loved all his artwork and spent so much on them. They were so fragile and beautiful. The artists had painted them so carefully and clear enough to have a meaning. At times, he would usually just stare at them. I always imagined that he hoped the artwork could talk back to him. That was his own form of therapy. I never blamed him for what he believed. He also needed to heal, we all did. Once we were done setting up everything, I went back to my room to set it up. For this, my music was essential to fulfill this. I checked through my purse for my phone and tried connecting to my AirPods pro but to no avail. s**t! I left it in the car. I rush downstairs to pick it up from the car. While I went close to the car, I felt like I was being watched. It could probably be my dad or my Nana. To add to that, there was also a silent growl coming from the forest around. I looked around hoping to see an animal, but my eyes met nothing. This place is starting to give me the creeps already, I thought to myself quietly.I quickly waived the thought away, the van and get back into the house. “You all must be so tired and famished. Let me fish up some Macandcheese for you. Iris, you must eat” I heard her say from the kitchen as I stepped into the house. The aroma of the food already making me salivate, I went into the kitchen. After eating, I went back to continue what I had started. The growl echoed once again inside my head and I looked out of the window towards where I heard it from. In addition to my disappointment, I still didn’t see anything strange there, not even an animal. All I could see were the dense bushes and trunks. How could I feel a presence when Nana and dad were inside the house still unpacking? Loads of questions went through my mind. Unfortunately, none could be answered. I gave up and lost the battle to sleep.
