Chapter Four

My alarm wouldn’t stop blaring the next morning. Luckily, I didn’t have school yet, so I wasn’t tasked with fighting sleep and figuring out what to wear. I put my phone off and attempted going back to sleep. I had gone to bed so late because of those crazy thoughts that there was a being inside the bushes watching me, that I didn’t notice I had stayed up till 3am.

I had to make up for all the hours of sleep I lost. Today was a Saturday, not much was going to happen anyways.

. I rolled up the duvets to cover myself properly and let my eyes shut.

After what seemed like a few hours, I woke up to a loud noise coming from the kitchen. It has to be Nana whipping up some of her special meals. It took me up to an hour to get up from my bed and get dressed to head downstairs. Constant scrolling through t****k and checking up on the activities of others on i********: ate up most of my time.

My dad was already outside reviving the engine of the lawnmower. “Good morning Nana” I said while hugging her from behind. “Good morning my love, hope you slept well” she said in response to my greeting. I nodded in acceptance. Once I was done grabbing breakfast, I went outside to take in some fresh air. I waved at my dad while he was mowing the lawn. He smiled back while shouting out something I wasn’t able to hear. Why do lawnmowers have to be this loud? I thought to myself.

Later that evening, I decided to sit outside and just enjoy the quietness of the environment. I had just finished Facetiming my friends. They were so worried and I felt bad I had not called them since I arrived. It wasn’t my fault, I had tsp much to do. As they hung up the call, I heard a growl coming from the bush. Just like the one I heard yesterday. I turned slowly to look at the bush, trying to figure out the exact place the sound was coming from.

As I narrowed my gaze, my eyes met with a pair of red eyes. I jumped up from my seat, startled. The crease on my forehead deepens as I try to narrow the source. Could it be a human being, or an animal watching us so closely? I started feeling goosebumps all over my skin. Is this really going to be like some horror movies I’ve seen on Netflix? Those eyes reminded me of a being from the movie I watched with Stella.

A wolf? No, why would a wolf just be lurking around the house? Maybe it’s just some animal looking into the compound. It’s nothing to worry about, I guess. Let me not put some twine crazy thoughts in my mind. I put confusingly while staring at the bush, the eyes were no more there. See, that is proof that it may have just been my imagination, messing with me. I need to cut down on the amount of fantasy movies I watch before I actually start seeing full-blooded vampires at the doorstep too. I chuckle quietly to myself while trying to arrange my dress.

“Iris, it’s getting pretty late. I think you should come in now. A lady shouldn’t be outside at night. You never know what happens these days.” Nana’s voice echoes from the living room. It was only both of us at home. My dad had gone out to see a few of his friends. Lucky him, at least he had friends he could visit in Masetown.

My gaze snaps towards the doorstep as I see her gesturing me to come in. I let out a sigh and smiled at her before making my way into the house. But not before I turned around to pick up my phone, my eyes mistakenly met up with the same pair of eyes as before. What is happening in this town? I walked into time, carefully minding my steps and I shut the door behind me.

Nana tapped on the seat beside her on the couch, signaling me to sit with her. I sat down beside her and dropped my head on my shoulder. I remember when she used to tell me stories when I was little. Nana was the best and I didn’t want anything to happen to her at all. She started telling me about how she was faring, careful enough to also ask how I was doing.

“Here are the forms for your new school. I spoke to a few friends of mine and we were able to get you started by Monday. Don’t worry, everything is going to be just fine. Your dad and I will make sure of that.”

“Okay Nana. I’ll fill them in later and get them to you by tomorrow morning.” I gave her a hug. I needed comfort and I got it from my Nana. We spent the rest of the night watching a movie and catching up. She was so much fun, no one would think she was her age.

Later that night, I was so famished. If nothing entered my stomach in the next few minutes, I would faint. I headed over to Nana’s assorted kitchen and dished out a load of pasta for myself. My room was my next destination. After eating, I went through the forms and I was also able to look at my timetable. The subjects weren’t so complicated as I thought. Though I was moving from a private school in Detroit to a public in Masetown, I had a lot of adjusting to do. I let the music blaring from my AirPods drift me to sleep.
