Chapter 11

The Crown That Chose The servant's words lingered in the air long after he finished speaking. "A crown." Isabella stared at him. "And it has your name written on it." For several seconds, she said nothing. The palace corridor suddenly felt too small. Too quiet. Too real. She had accepted many impossible things recently. The existence of a hidden kingdom. The revelation of her bloodline. The appearance of ancient enemies. Even the fact that people kept calling her "Your Majesty." But a crown with her name on it? That felt different. Personal. Final. As though fate had stopped asking and started deciding. "Where is it?" she asked. The servant swallowed. "The royal vault." His nervousness was obvious. Apparently everyone in the kingdom understood the significance of this except her. "Who knows about it?" "Most of the palace." Wonderful. Just wonderful. Nothing remained secret for more than five minutes around here. The servant hesitated. "Lord Victor knows." Her mood instantly worsened. Of course he did. If there was an opportunity to challenge her, question her legitimacy, or generally make her life difficult, Lord Victor Thorn would somehow appear. It was practically a talent. "Thank you." The servant bowed and hurried away. Almost ran away. Interesting. Apparently the crown made people nervous. Or perhaps she made people nervous now. Neither possibility was comforting. A familiar presence appeared behind her. "You should see it." Isabella turned. Lucian stood at the end of the corridor. Dressed entirely in black. As always. The man clearly believed colors were optional. "You heard." "I hear most things." She didn't doubt it. Being king apparently came with excellent timing. And a disturbing ability to appear exactly when she needed him. Or when she least expected him. Sometimes both. "Does everyone know?" "Almost everyone." She groaned. Lucian looked amused. Again. Far too amused. "You find this funny." "No." Liar. Complete liar. "You absolutely find this funny." His lips twitched. "Perhaps a little." She narrowed her eyes. The Lycan King looked entirely too pleased with himself. Unfortunately, she was becoming familiar with that expression. And even more unfortunately... She was beginning to like it. A dangerous development. One she preferred not to examine too closely. "Take me to the vault." Lucian's expression immediately became serious. Good. One less smile to distract her. "Are you certain?" The question surprised her. "Shouldn't I be?" Silence. That was not encouraging. At all. Then again, very little about her life had been encouraging recently. She sighed. "Lucian." "Yes?" "What happens if I don't go?" His answer came instantly. "The crown waits." A pause. "Until you're ready." That wasn't what she expected. She had assumed there would be pressure. Expectations. Demands. Instead he was giving her a choice. Again. Lucian rarely forced her into anything. Which was strange. Most powerful men she had known preferred control. Damien certainly had. The comparison appeared before she could stop it. Immediately, bitterness followed. Lucian noticed. Of course he noticed. He always noticed. "You thought about him." Not a question. A statement. Isabella looked away. "I wish people would stop reading my face." His expression softened. "You loved him." The words hurt less than they once would have. Not because the wound had healed. Because she was finally beginning to understand something. Love wasn't supposed to feel like ownership. Or manipulation. Or sacrifice without appreciation. Perhaps she had loved the idea of Damien. The future she imagined with him. Not the man he ultimately became. "I don't miss him." Lucian remained silent. Waiting. "I miss who I thought he was." The admission felt strangely liberating. Painful. But liberating. Lucian nodded. As though he understood perfectly. Perhaps he did. A shadow crossed his face. Gone almost immediately. Yet she saw it. Loss. Old loss. The kind he never discussed. Before she could ask, he offered his arm. "Come." She stared. Then looked at him. Then looked back at his arm. "Are we attending a royal ball?" His eyebrow lifted. "No." "Then why are you doing that?" For the first time, genuine confusion appeared on his face. As though the answer was obvious. "The vault is dangerous." That was not the answer she expected. "What?" "The crown may react." Wonderful. The magical crown could react. Her life was becoming increasingly absurd. Lucian's expression remained serious. "If something happens, I need to be close." Their eyes met. And suddenly she understood. Protection. Not ceremony. Protection. Something warm stirred inside her chest. A dangerous feeling. One she quickly ignored. Mostly ignored. Fine. Attempted to ignore. She slipped her arm through his. Immediately, a strange sense of calm settled over her. Unfair. Completely unfair. No one should have that effect on another person. Especially not someone with golden eyes and an irritating tendency to be right. Together, they descended into the depths of the mountain. The royal vault lay far beneath the palace. Deeper than Isabella expected. Ancient corridors stretched endlessly. Silver symbols glowed faintly along the walls. The deeper they traveled, the older everything felt. As though they were walking backward through history. Eventually they reached a massive stone door. It towered over them. At least thirty feet high. Covered in carvings. Kings. Queens. Battles. Moons. Wolves. Entire centuries etched into stone. Two guards stood nearby. Both immediately lowered their heads. "The vault awaits, My King." Lucian nodded. The guards stepped aside. Slowly. The doors opened. A rush of silver light flooded the corridor. Ancient power washed over Isabella. Recognition followed. The sensation was unmistakable. The vault knew her. The realization sent chills through her. Inside, the chamber was breathtaking. Treasures filled the room. Ancient weapons. Royal banners. Golden armor. Artifacts older than most kingdoms. Yet Isabella barely noticed any of them. Because at the center of the chamber stood a pedestal. And upon that pedestal rested a crown. Silver. Elegant. Beautiful. Alive. The moment she saw it, her breath caught. Not because of its beauty. Because it felt familiar. As though she had seen it before. In dreams. Memories. Another life. The crown began glowing. The symbols along its surface illuminated one by one. Ancient runes. Ancient promises. Ancient history. Then the room trembled. Every guard immediately stepped back. Lucian's expression hardened. The crown rose into the air. On its own. Silence filled the chamber. Absolute silence. No one moved. No one breathed. The crown floated toward Isabella. Slowly. Deliberately. Purposefully. Every instinct screamed at her to run. Instead she stood frozen. Unable to look away. The crown stopped inches from her face. Then a voice echoed through the vault. A woman's voice. Strong. Regal. Ancient. "Do you accept?" The question resonated through her soul. Not her ears. Her soul. The room disappeared. The guards vanished. Even Lucian faded. Only the voice remained. "Do you accept the burden?" Images flashed before her eyes. War. Death. Sacrifice. Kingdoms burning. Children crying. Soldiers falling. The cost of a crown. The cost of leadership. The cost of power. Then came different images. Hope. Unity. Strength. Protection. People standing together. A kingdom thriving. A future worth fighting for. The voice returned. "Power without sacrifice creates tyrants." A pause. "Sacrifice without purpose creates martyrs." Another pause. "Which will you become?" Isabella's heart pounded. She finally understood. This wasn't a reward. It wasn't a prize. It was a choice. Perhaps the most important choice of her life. The voice waited. The crown waited. History waited. And for the first time since everything changed... Isabella knew her answer. She lifted her head. "I don't want power." The silence deepened. "I want justice." The crown brightened. Silver light erupted throughout the vault. The voice spoke one final time. And this time it sounded pleased. "Then rise, Isabella Blackwood." The crown settled gently onto her head. The moment it touched her— Power exploded. Ancient. Limitless. Magnificent. The entire mountain shook. The kingdom bells rang. Every symbol across the city illuminated. People rushed into the streets. Warriors stopped training. Servants dropped what they carried. Nobles stared toward the palace. Because every person in the kingdom felt it. The coronation. Not official. Not public. Yet undeniable. The crown had chosen. And it had chosen its Queen. Far away, hidden inside a fortress carved from black stone, crimson eyes snapped open. The hooded figure rose from his throne. Fury distorted his features. "The Crown awakened." The messenger before him trembled. "Yes, my lord." The room exploded. Stone shattered. Dark power surged. The messenger collapsed in terror. Seven hundred years. Seven hundred years of hunting. Seven hundred years of ensuring the royal bloodline remained extinct. And now the impossible had happened. The heir had survived. Worse. The crown had accepted her. The hooded figure slowly smiled. A terrifying smile. "Then the girl is far more dangerous than we thought." His crimson eyes glowed. Cold. Murderous. Obsessive. "Prepare the Blood Hunt." The messenger went pale. "My lord... not the Blood Hunt." The smile widened. "Bring me the Queen." Silence followed. Then came four words that would soon change everything. "Dead or alive."
