Chapter 23

1393 Words
The Queen's Choice The world had gone silent. Not peaceful. Silent. There was a difference. Peace was the absence of conflict. This was the silence of something waiting. Waiting to see what Isabella would do. The first king's voice still echoed through the kingdom. Choose, my daughter. The words haunted every corner of her mind. Stand beside him. Or watch the world fall. It was not an offer. Not really. It was a test. And Isabella hated tests she never agreed to take. The royal council chamber was divided. That was the first thing Isabella noticed when she entered. The room that once stood united beneath Lucian's leadership was now filled with uncertainty. Some believed the first king could be reasoned with. Some believed he was their only chance. Others believed Isabella was too dangerous to remain free. She heard the whispers. She saw the doubt. "The first king created this kingdom." One noble spoke carefully. "Perhaps we have misunderstood his intentions." General Lyra immediately turned. "Misunderstood?" Her voice was sharp. "He destroyed entire civilizations." The noble lowered his gaze. "But he also created ours." The argument continued. Isabella stood silently. Listening. Watching. Learning. Because this was something she had discovered about leadership. People rarely showed their true beliefs when things were easy. Fear revealed everything. Finally, Lucian spoke. "Enough." The room fell silent. "The first king has manipulated history for centuries." His golden eyes moved across the council. "Do not mistake age for wisdom." Nobody challenged him. But Isabella noticed something. Not everyone was convinced. And that worried her. After the meeting, Isabella found Lucian in the training courtyard. He stood alone. Practicing. Not because he needed to. Because he was angry. She watched silently for a moment. Every movement was controlled. Precise. Powerful. But she could see it. The exhaustion beneath the strength. "You knew." He stopped. Slowly lowering his weapon. "I did." She stepped closer. "The prophecy." His expression tightened. "Yes." "Tell me everything." For a moment, he said nothing. Then he placed the weapon down. "I was afraid." The admission surprised her. Lucian Nightshade. The Lycan King. Afraid. "I thought if I told you, you would see me as your enemy." She stared at him. "And now?" His eyes met hers. "Now I know hiding the truth was worse." A pause. "The prophecy was written after Queen Elara's death." He looked toward the mountains. "It spoke of a final heir." Isabella listened carefully. "An heir who would possess the power to either restore the world..." A pause. "Or end it." She frowned. "That's not a prophecy about me and you." "No." His answer came immediately. That surprised her. "Then why did Malakar say—" "Because he twisted it." Lucian walked closer. "The prophecy never said the king would destroy the queen." A silence. "It said the king who protects her must choose." "Choose what?" His expression darkened. "Whether to save her..." A pause. "Or save the world." The words struck her. Because suddenly she understood. The prophecy wasn't about betrayal. It was about sacrifice. Lucian continued. "The final line was hidden." "Why?" "Because it was considered too dangerous." She waited. He looked at her. "The queen would not be destroyed by the king." A pause. "She would be destroyed if the king chose the world over her." The meaning settled between them. And Isabella finally understood. The prophecy wasn't predicting what would happen. It was warning them what could happen. That night, Isabella returned to the underground chamber alone. She needed answers. Real answers. Not secrets. Not half-truths. The stone door waited. The Gate. The source of everything. She placed her hand against it. Immediately, the darkness responded. But this time... She wasn't afraid. "Show yourself." The air changed. The shadows moved. And then he appeared. The first king. Not as a voice. Not as a vision. In person. He stood before her. Ancient armor. Black crown. Eyes that carried centuries of ambition. Yet when he looked at her... There was something unexpected. Sadness. "You came." Isabella kept her distance. "I came for answers." A small smile appeared. "Elara always had that fire." The mention of her ancestor made Isabella uncomfortable. "Don't compare me to her." The king tilted his head. "Why?" "Because I am not her." For the first time, his expression changed. Interest. "Good." The answer surprised her. "Good?" "Yes." He stepped closer. "Elara loved this world too much." His voice softened. "She sacrificed herself for people who feared her." Isabella studied him. "And you?" "I loved this world too much." A pause. "That is why I tried to change it." There it was. The same justification. The same belief. Every villain thought they were saving something. "You opened the Gate." "Yes." "You killed innocent people." His expression hardened. "Because every great change requires sacrifice." Isabella shook her head. "No." Her voice was firm. "That is what people say when they stop seeing others as people." The first king stared at her. For a moment... She saw something. Not anger. Recognition. "You truly are her descendant." "Who?" He looked at her. "The daughter who rejected me." The revelation stunned her. "Your daughter?" The first king nodded. "My greatest failure." For the first time, his voice carried genuine pain. "She saw what I became before I did." He looked toward the Gate. "She chose the Moon's path." "And created my bloodline." "Yes." Silence. "You want me to join you because I remind you of her." The king did not deny it. "Partly." "Partly?" His eyes returned to hers. "Because you are the only person who can complete what I started." There it was. The truth. Not love. Not family. Purpose. "You don't want a daughter." Her voice hardened. "You want an heir." The first king remained silent. And that silence was the answer. Isabella stepped back. "I understand now." The king watched her. "You carry his heart." She frowned. "Whose?" "Lucian's." The words surprised her. The first king smiled faintly. "That is why you will choose him." A strange emotion crossed his face. Sadness. Almost pity. "And that is why you will lose him." Before Isabella could respond, the chamber shook violently. The Gate cracked. A powerful force pushed through. The first king looked upward. Concern flashed across his face. Something was wrong. "What is happening?" For the first time... The ancient king looked afraid. "He came early." "Who?" The answer came from the darkness behind the Gate. A voice. Not the first king's. Older. Darker. Hungrier. "You always believed you controlled me." The first king stepped back. Impossible. The shadows moved. Something was behind the Gate. Something even the first king feared. "You were never the master." The ancient king's expression changed. "Impossible." The voice laughed. "Kings always believe they rule." The Gate cracked further. A hand emerged from the darkness. The first king looked at Isabella. For the first time... Not as an heir. Not as a daughter. As someone who needed help. "Leave." The command shocked her. "What?" "Run." The mountain shook. The Gate began opening. The first king whispered: "The thing beyond the Gate was never my weapon." A pause. "It was my prison." Above ground, Lucian felt it. A power unlike anything before. Not the first king. Something else. Something worse. He ran toward the mountain. General Lyra followed. "What is happening?" Lucian's expression was grim. "The prophecy was incomplete." "What do you mean?" His eyes turned toward the mountain. "The first king was never the final enemy." The ground split. Dark energy erupted into the sky. And deep beneath the earth... Something ancient awakened. Something that had waited even longer than the first king. Inside the chamber, Isabella stared at the impossible darkness beyond the Gate. The first king stood beside her. Not against her. Not attacking. Protecting her. A strange realization entered her mind. The enemy she had feared for centuries... Was afraid of what was coming. Then the darkness spoke. "Little moon." Isabella froze. Because that voice... She knew it. Not from history. Not from dreams. From somewhere deeper. Somewhere inside her. "You finally returned." The darkness moved closer. "My queen." And Isabella realized the truth. The war had never been between her and the first king. They had both been preparing for the same enemy. Something far older. Something far more powerful. Something that wanted Isabella for itself.
