Chapter 18

The Gate Beneath the Kingdom The mountain was dying. That was the first thought that entered Isabella's mind as the sacred tomb collapsed around them. Not breaking. Not falling. Dying. The ancient stones groaned as though the entire mountain was fighting against something awakening beneath it. Dust filled the air. The ground cracked beneath their feet. Warriors shouted commands. "Move!" "Get everyone out!" "Protect the Queen!" The word echoed through the chaos. Queen. A title that once felt impossible. A title that once belonged to someone else. Now it followed her everywhere. But at that moment, Isabella didn't feel like a queen. She felt terrified. Because Queen Elara's final words continued repeating inside her mind. Trust the king. Trust Lucian. The same man everyone had accused of betrayal. The same man who carried seven hundred years of pain. The same man who had never once looked at her with anything but protection. Her heart wanted to trust him. Her mind demanded answers. And somewhere beneath them... Something was waking. "Isabella!" Lucian's voice cut through the destruction. She turned. A massive piece of stone fell from above. Before she could move, Lucian reached her. His arms wrapped around her. The impact shook the ground. For a moment, everything disappeared. The dust. The noise. The fear. Only his heartbeat remained. Strong. Steady. Alive. Then he pulled away immediately. His eyes searched her face. "Are you hurt?" She stared at him. Of all the things happening... That was still his first question. Not the collapsing tomb. Not Malakar escaping. Not the Gate. Her. "I'm fine." His expression didn't relax. "You don't look fine." She almost laughed. "You always say that." "Because you always say you're fine when you aren't." The response caught her off guard. Because he was right. Annoyingly right. She looked away. "Lucian..." His expression changed. He knew that tone. The tone that meant she had questions. Difficult questions. The kind he had been avoiding. Before she could speak, General Lyra approached. "My King." Lucian immediately became serious. "What is the damage?" "The tomb is unstable." Lyra glanced toward the broken chamber behind them. "But that's not the worst part." A cold feeling settled in Isabella's stomach. "What happened?" The general hesitated. "The hunters weren't trying to steal anything." Lucian's eyes narrowed. "They were distracting us." Everyone went silent. A terrible realization spread through the group. Malakar hadn't come for the Lunar Heart. He hadn't come for Queen Elara's remains. He hadn't even come for Isabella. Not primarily. He had come for time. To keep them occupied. To allow something else to happen. "What did they do?" Lucian asked. General Lyra looked toward the mountain. Toward the darkness beneath them. "They opened the first seal." The journey back to the kingdom was unlike anything Isabella had experienced before. No one spoke. Not because there was nothing to say. Because everyone was afraid of the answers. The sky had changed. The moon, once bright and silver, appeared surrounded by dark clouds. A strange shadow covered part of its surface. The warriors noticed. The elders noticed. Everyone noticed. The kingdom itself seemed to know something was wrong. When they returned to the palace, Lucian immediately summoned the council. But this time... Isabella didn't wait outside. She walked directly into the chamber. And nobody stopped her. The same nobles who once questioned her existence now lowered their heads. The change was almost unbelievable. A few weeks ago, she was a rejected Luna from a minor pack. Now she stood beside the Lycan King. Not behind him. Beside him. A queen. The council began immediately. "The first seal has weakened," Seraphina announced. Fear spread among the nobles. One elderly lord whispered: "The prophecy..." Lucian's expression darkened. "Do not speak of it as though it is already decided." The room fell silent. Isabella noticed something. Lucian was angry. Not because he feared the prophecy. Because he hated the idea that fate had already chosen their ending. Interesting. Very interesting. "The Gate cannot fully open yet," Seraphina continued. "Why?" Isabella asked. Everyone looked at her. She continued. "Why can't it open?" Seraphina hesitated. Then answered. "Because you are still alive." The room went quiet. Again. She hated that. Every answer created three more questions. "You said I am the seal." The older woman nodded. "What does that mean?" Nobody spoke. Lucian finally answered. "It means the Gate is connected to your blood." Her heart sank. "How?" "The first Queen created the seal using her own bloodline." A pause. "Every generation carried a piece of that power." Isabella understood. Slowly. The bloodline. The crown. The visions. Aetherion. Everything connected. "You mean..." Lucian looked at her. "You are the final lock." The words were quiet. But devastating. The final lock. Not a chosen one. Not a blessing. A responsibility. A burden. The kind of burden that could destroy a person. She looked down at her hands. Hands that suddenly felt different. Powerful. Dangerous. That night, Isabella couldn't sleep. Too many thoughts. Too many secrets. Too many unanswered questions. She stood on the balcony overlooking the kingdom. Thousands of lights glittered below. People sleeping peacefully. Unaware that something ancient was waiting beneath them. She wondered how many people would suffer because of her. A familiar presence appeared behind her. She didn't turn. "Do you ever announce yourself?" "No." She smiled slightly. "I noticed." Lucian stood beside her. For a while, neither spoke. The silence between them felt comfortable. That was becoming a problem. A big problem. "You should hate me." The words surprised her. She turned. "What?" Lucian looked out over the kingdom. "For what happened." She studied his face. The king who carried centuries of regret. The man who believed every tragedy was his fault. "You didn't betray her." His expression tightened. "You don't know that." "No." She stepped closer. "But I know what I saw." He looked at her. "What did you see?" "The way she looked at you." Silence. "She trusted you." His eyes shifted. A small crack appeared in his carefully controlled expression. "Isabella..." "No." She shook her head. "Listen to me." The wind moved around them. The moonlight touched his face. "Everyone keeps telling me what you did." A pause. "But nobody talks about what you lost." Something changed. Just slightly. Lucian looked away. For the first time, she saw something she never expected. He looked tired. Not physically. Emotionally. Seven hundred years of carrying a weight nobody else could see. "You shouldn't care." The words were quiet. Almost a warning. She frowned. "Why?" "Because caring about me puts you in danger." Her heart tightened. There it was. The same thing he always did. Push people away. Protect them by leaving them alone. "You don't get to decide that." His eyes met hers. And for a moment... Neither moved. The connection between them was undeniable now. No longer a spark. No longer curiosity. Something deeper. Something terrifying. Then— A roar shook the palace. Not from outside. From beneath. The entire kingdom trembled. The balcony cracked. The moon darkened. And a voice echoed through the minds of every wolf, every Lycan, every creature connected to the supernatural world. A voice ancient enough to belong to another age. "The seal weakens." Everyone froze. "The Queen has returned." A pause. Then the voice became darker. "The Gate will open." Isabella felt the blood drain from her face. Because the final words were not a warning. They were a promise. "And the world will remember why it feared what lies beneath." The connection vanished. The kingdom fell silent. Then every alarm in the palace began ringing. A guard rushed onto the balcony. His face was pale. "My King!" Lucian turned. "What happened?" The guard struggled to speak. "The northern border." A pause. "They're attacking." Lucian's expression hardened. "Who?" The guard swallowed. Then answered: "The creatures from the Gate." Silence. Absolute silence. The war had begun.
