CHAPTER 2: The Dinner

819 Words
I didn’t even wait to settle down before I started ranting. “Nancy, you won’t believe the kind of human being I met today,” I said, dropping my bag on the desk and sliding into the seat beside her. She didn’t even look up at first. “Good day to you too, drama queen.” “I’m serious!” That finally got her attention. She turned, eyes curious. “Alright… what happened?” I leaned closer, lowering my voice like I was about to reveal state secrets. “So I went to the restaurant to eat, right? Everything was fine until this - this annoyingly handsome, arrogant, insufferable man just walks up to my table and bangs it like he owns the place.” Nancy blinked. Then blinked again. “And?” “And he told me to get up!” I snapped. “Like I was some random nobody!” Nancy gasped dramatically. “The audacity.” “Exactly!” I threw my hands in the air. “And when I refused - because obviously I refused - he called the staff and canceled my order!” At that point, Nancy couldn’t hold it anymore. She burst out laughing. “Nancy!” I hit her arm. “This is not funny!” “It is!” she said between laughs. “It’s about time someone humbled you. I wish I was there to see your face!” “I was NOT humbled,” I scoffed. “I was insulted.” “Same thing,” she teased. I rolled my eyes. “And guess what? Turns out he’s the owner of the restaurant.” Nancy’s laughter stopped instantly. “Wait… what?” “Yeah,” I muttered. “His mum owns the school, so technically… he owns it too.” Nancy leaned back, impressed. “Okay… rich, rude, and ridiculously good-looking?” I groaned. “Don’t even start.” She smirked. “Sounds like your type.” “He’s not my type. He’s a walking headache.” But for some annoying reason… his face kept flashing in my mind. Ugh, that stupid smirk. That annoying confidence. That voice. “Get up.” I scoffed to myself. Who did he think he was? The rest of the day passed in a blur. Classes, lectures, assignments - I barely paid attention. My mind kept drifting back to him. By the time I got home, exhaustion had taken over. I barely stepped into the living room before I heard a familiar voice. “Daisy.” I turned immediately. “Dad?” He was just walking in, his presence filling the room instantly. “When did you get back?” I asked, surprised. “Just now,” he said with a small smile. “Come here.” I walked over and hugged him briefly. “I missed you.” “I missed you too,” he replied before pulling away. “Go get ready. We’re having dinner with a family friend tonight.” My smile faded. “Tonight?” “Yes. And you must be present.” Something about his tone made me pause. “Dad, I have assignments....” “Daisy.” That one word was enough. I sighed. “Fine.” The house was unusually quiet that evening. Too quiet. Even Mum looked… different. Like she was hiding something. And I didn’t like it. Not one bit. Dinner was already set by the time I came downstairs. Elegant. Formal. Important. Yeah… something was definitely off. “Sit,” Mum said gently. I obeyed, glancing around the table. “Who exactly are we waiting for?” I asked. “Guests,” Dad replied simply. Before I could ask anything else .... The door opened. A shadow fell across the hallway. Footsteps followed - confident, slow, familiar. My heart skipped. No… no way. Please don’t let it be.... I turned. And froze. It was him. The same arrogant, insufferable, annoyingly good-looking man from the restaurant. Standing in my house. Looking just as calm and composed as ever. Like he belonged there. Like I didn’t. Our eyes locked. Recognition flashed across his face. Then - that same smirk. My mouth fell open before I could stop myself. “You?” I breathed. Silence filled the room. And then, before I could think.... I said it. “You… you… this Greek god?!” Silence stretched between us. The air felt heavier, charged, almost… electric. He tilted his head slightly, as if trying to read my expression. I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t. Something about him… unnerving, magnetic, infuriating… had me frozen. Then Dad cleared his throat, breaking the tension. “Dinner’s about to start. Everyone, please sit.” We both hesitated, exchanging a look that said: Why are we here? And that question hung in the room, unanswered, as I realized… tonight was going to be far more complicated than I thought.
