Chapter 7
“A Challenge”
POV Cassy
I sneak up the stairs like a mouse. My objective is to sneak in the kitchen for enough food to last the day and then back downstairs without anyone noticing.
Ethan has breakfast early, and Sebastian should be jogging.
I peek around the corner to check if the coast is clear when Ethan sees me.
Damn it!
“Sit down and have breakfast with me,” Ethan says.
I reluctantly sit down and pour myself a coffee and grab pancakes.
Ethan is rambling on, and all I can think about and picture is a naked Sebastian in the shower.
“Cassy, did you hear me?”
“Huh?”
“Sophia was looking for Sebastian this morning. Do you know where he is?”
“Probably jogging with Rusty, then warrior training and whatever.”
I return to my dream world.
Ethan gets up and leaves with his coffee.
When someone waves a hand in front of me.
“I don’t appreciate you stealing my boyfriend last night!” Sophia barks.
‘We should kill her. Poison her food.’ Cush howls in my head.
“Josh is your boyfriend?” I ask, still zoned out and not thinking.
‘She’s talking about our mate!’
“Oh, you think you’re funny.” She says. “I have been with Sebastian for five years. You better watch your back or I will end you.”
Yay, me, another narcissist
She bends down and starts yelling in my face when I hear a growl.
Sebastian steps in the kitchen, and his eyes are dark black.
“Oh hi Knox, don’t worry, I’m fine. You don’t need to protect me from her.” She smiles.
“Oh, my. You know he’s not a dog.” I say out loud by accident.
“You better watch yourself, b***h! Sabastian is mine.” She yells in my face.
Sebastian is getting dangerously close to her, and she’s really not cluing in to who I am.
Wait? He didn’t tell her. She thinks I’m just some house Guest! The Nerve!
‘He is still mad at you for rejecting him. Of course, he didn’t tell her.’ Cush snaps.
I stew silently, wishing my wolf could rip apart that annoying face of hers.
‘Maybe you should spend more time trying to shift.’ Cush growls.
“Shut up, Cush.” I yell in my head.
Sebastian suddenly picks Sophia up and slams her into the fridge.
She slides to the bottom of the fridge like a banana peel.
She goes to get back up, but Sebastian hovers over her.
“Sweetheart, it’s me, your little boo.” She sobs.
Little boo, they’re at the cute nickname stage. Ew.
He backs up and looks at her.
“Why are you on the floor, Sophie?”
He helps her up and pulls out a chair for her to sit down.
Then sits down and acts like everything is normal.
“Where were you last night, sweetie?” She asks.
He looks at me and smiles. “I was busy.”
“Well, we can catch up on what you missed out last night this evening,” she smiles, winking at me.
“Maybe,” he says, giving her a kiss on the cheek.
‘He just kissed another woman! Kill her now, Cass!’ Cush howls even louder in my head.
“How? With my nonexistent claws?” I cover my ears.
Josh walks in and sits beside me.
“Morning, Cassy, what’s your plans today?” Josh asks.
“Ugh, my head hurts. Maybe we could go to town and then play some chess.” I smile.
“No.” Sebastian snaps. “Your not going anywhere alone with my brother!”
“I’m sure the girl can do what she wants, Sebastian.” Sophia says, glaring at me, if looks could kill, I would be pushing up daisy’s.
‘This girl wants to end us, Cassy!’ Cush growls.
“Mind your f*****g own business, Sophia. No one asked you! You’re welcome to stay for a few days. But don’t go near my Cassy and I’m going to be busy.” He grabs his coffee and leaves with Sophia chasing after him apologizing.
Josh and I play chess on his side of the palace all day. I really don’t want to run into the mistress again.
I notice the guards watch us closely, like Sebastian put them up to it.
Cush is giving me the silent treatment.
At dinner time Sebastián grabs my hand and drags me to the dinner table with his parents, Sophia and a few of their friends.
He pulls out a chair for me to sit down. Then sits beside Sophia on the opposite side of me.
Josh sits down beside me, and a sexy blond man sits on the other side of me.
I notice Sebastian’s eyes change hue to his wolf a few times, but he doesn’t react or move.
We have roast beef dinner and then everyone starts drinking wine.
I push my wine away. When the sexy blond man named Jackson, who is friends with Sophia, encourages me to take a sip.
I try one sip.
Josh passes a cheese plate to me, and I try the wine with the cheese, and it’s heavenly.
Everyone gets a bit tipsy and starts talking about their first kiss.
I know I can’t talk about Josh, so I bring up Cash Winters, my first almost kiss. He was a jock at my school. He leaned in to kiss me one afternoon after I slipped on a wet floor and he caught me. The gym teacher stopped us.
He gave me his number, and I never called him.
“Not thee, Cash Winters? The Alpha King’s middle son?” Sophia asks.
“I don’t know much about him. Other than it was hard to keep my eyes off him in highschool.” I smirk.
Sebastian gives me a death stare, and his eyes stay black. I excuse myself from the table, and Josh follows.
We grab snacks from the kitchen and sit and play chest in the living room.
Sebastian walks in, grabs Josh out of his seat and takes his place. He restarts the board and puts two timers beside it.
“This is how you play real chess. We both have 90 minutes to finish the game.” He explains.
I usually take hours for one game. This is going to mess me up. Every time you play, you hit the timer. Then hit it when you’re done.
“When you can beat me once at chess within sixty minutes. I’ll marry you and drop my girls.” Sebastian says.
I suddenly get excited. Just beat him once! And he’s mine!
“What he isn’t telling you, Cassy, is that he’s a world champion chess player, and it took Mom twenty years to beat Dad. To be honest, I think he finally let her win.”
I feel like someone let the air out of me. Twenty years? I can’t wait twenty years.
“Twenty years is a long time to go without sex.” I say.
“What?” Sebastian says. “I never said we couldn’t have sex.”
“You think I’m going to sleep with you while you’re parading around with other women?” I growl.
“Yes,” he says.
“Well, think again. Just cause you happen to be all that.” I wave my arms around his silhouette. “Doesn’t mean I’m giving you my virginity. I can please myself just fine, thanks.”
Oh my God, did I just say that out loud!
I hit the timer, move a piece and then hit it again.
“You think you can resist me, do you?” Sebastian looks me right in the eyes to more or less say, challenge excepted.
