Chapter 2

The organ donation staff arrived within minutes. I made myself look heartbroken. "My husband was always such a kind man. Since he died so suddenly, I want part of him to live on. I hope he can save as many people as possible." A doctor from the organ donation unit clasped my hand. "On behalf of the families who may benefit, thank you." Then he asked, "Which organs would you like to donate?" I glanced at Megan and sighed. "My husband died from a stroke. Take whatever you can use. Or give his whole body to a medical school for teaching and research." Megan threw herself in front of the hospital bed and screamed, "No! Jason never wanted to be an organ donor. He told me before. We have to respect his wishes." I wiped my eyes. "Megan, Jason is my husband. I can make this decision. You're only his attending physician. I don't think I need to explain which of us has the legal authority here. And every minute you delay is another minute his organs deteriorate. You're a doctor too. Don't you want to save lives?" "She's right, Dr. Clarke," one of the donation staff said. "Please move." Megan refused to budge. She bit her lower lip. "I've already called his mother. At the very least, you should let her see Jason one last time." So Patricia was the person she had messaged. I thought for a moment, then nodded. The truth was that I never intended to donate Jason's organs. The moment the organ retrieval began, they would discover he was alive. I didn't want to expose his fake death. I wanted to make the fake death real. I had brought up organ donation only to either corner Megan into exposing her relationship with Jason or force Patricia to rush over and interfere. I wanted both of them to watch Jason die while they couldn't do anything about it. Later, their reactions could also serve as evidence if they tried to turn everything against me. Patricia rushed into the room. The rollers were still in her hair, so she had clearly received the call in the middle of a salon appointment. The moment she saw Jason still lying on the bed, intact, relief flashed across her face. Then she swung around and slapped me. "You b***h! You're nothing but bad luck for my son. He's dead because of you. And you still want people to cut him open? If anyone lays a finger on my son today, I'll make sure they regret it for the rest of their lives!" Patricia shoved the organ donation staff toward the door. "No donation. Nothing. Go butcher somebody else!" The staff had no choice but to leave. Only then did Megan visibly relax. She quickly pulled a white sheet over Jason. "You rotten b***h! Your husband is dead and you aren't even grieving. Instead of having him cremated and laid to rest, you want to give his body to a medical school. You want my son carved up after death. If you're so desperate to do a good deed, then donate your own organs. Drop dead right now, and I'll authorize them to take everything you have." I covered my swollen cheek and sobbed. "Mom, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I was only trying to help." She slapped me again before I could finish. "You don't get to speak. Go home right now. I'll take my son to the crematory myself." I immediately fell silent. Then I knelt, picked up the cup of water Megan had handed me earlier, and held it out to Patricia with both hands. After yelling for so long, Patricia's throat was dry. She suspected nothing and drank up the whole thing. Megan's face changed. She tried to stop Patricia, but it was too late. Less than 2 minutes later, Patricia slumped into a deep sleep. Sweat beaded across Megan's forehead again. She stammered, unable to meet my eyes. "Rachel, you're not... planning to donate his organs again, are you?"
