Chapter 3

660 Words
I shook my head and laid Patricia flat on the sofa. I made my voice tremble with grief. "Of course not. Patricia said no, so I won't do it." Megan relaxed. "She suddenly passed out. Something could be wrong. You should take her to the ER right away. I'll personally arrange Jason's cremation." "How could I do that?" I looked at her innocently. "You're a doctor. You know more than I do. You should take care of Patricia. I'll take Jason to the crematory." Then I called the crematory and asked them to come immediately. Megan tried again to stall me, saying, "There's no rush to cremate him. Wait until his mother wakes up. Jason isn't going anywhere." My eyes welled with tears. "Megan, Jason is dead. We need to take care of the living first. You're supposed to be my best friend, but you haven't supported me once today. Instead, you keep saying strange things. What exactly are you trying to do?" Megan was beside herself. She kept shaking Patricia, but Patricia remained completely unresponsive. By the time the crematory staff had Jason on a stretcher and were wheeling him away, Megan finally broke. She grabbed my sleeve. Her voice was hoarse with desperation. "Rachel, I... I think I just saw Jason move. Maybe we should try resuscitating him again." I held the death certificate in front of her face. "Megan, think very carefully before you say another word. If Jason is still alive, have you considered what that means for the hospital? Have you considered what it means for you? A living man was wrongfully declared dead. You could be facing criminal charges. I don't know what kind of trouble it'd cause the hospital, but I'm pretty sure you'd end up in prison." I stared at her. "So think again. Did you really see Jason move?" Megan looked frantic and clearly had no idea what to say. I let out a humorless laugh, pulled my arm away, and followed the crematory vehicle. I looked at Jason lying on the stretcher and couldn't stop myself from smiling. In my previous life, when I saw him again on the street, his face had barely aged. I had thrown myself in front of his car, desperate for him to recognize me and hear what I had been through all those years. Jason squinted at me for a long moment before he finally recognized me. Then he laughed at me. "Oh, it's you. It's only been 10 years, and you already look older than my grandma." By then, my voice was rough, and I was permanently stooped. I looked 30 years older when I was only 40. I stammered, "Y-you are still alive?" Megan sat beside him and laughed until she nearly doubled over. "He faked his death—to get rid of you, of course!" Jason didn't even need to finish explaining. I got it. If he divorced me, he had to give me half of the marital assets. Everyone would also know he cheated and abandoned his wife. But a fake death would solve all his problems. He could leave every debt to me, move all his assets elsewhere, and start a new life openly with Megan. I was too furious to speak. Jason, however, seemed eager to continue. "You know, I could hear you in the hospital that day. I still remember the way you cried." He grinned. "I honestly don't know how you managed to sound exactly like a honking goose." Then he mocked my sobbing with exaggerated honks and burst into laughter. Their mocking laughter hit me like a blow. I clutched my chest and collapsed. Megan gave a startled little cry. "Jason, do you think she's trying to fake an injury and blame us? We should go." Jason muttered a curse, stepped on the accelerator, and drove away without checking my condition. My final memory was the car disappearing down the road. Then everything went black.
