While I was still lost in the painful memory, Jason's finger twitched. Maybe the anesthetic was beginning to wear off, and he had realized where he was being taken. He was starting to wake up.
I urged the driver to go faster.
"Please hurry. My mother-in-law is trying to take my husband's body away because she wants it donated. I just want my husband to rest in peace."
The driver agreed and pressed down harder on the accelerator.
I leaned over Jason's chest and finally said everything I never had the chance to say in my previous life.
"I know you're not dead. I also know you've been cheating on me for a long time. You staged all of this because you wanted to run off with Megan and leave me behind to pay your debts. But I don't hate you. I've decided to respect your wishes. If you want to be dead that badly, I'll make sure you're cremated as quickly as possible. I know you can hear me. I'm not sure whether you can feel pain, but I hope you can. Then you'll know exactly what it feels like to be cremated alive. You may even be the first person to go through it fully conscious. You might be wondering why I'm doing this or how I know everything. It doesn't matter if I tell you now. I've already lived through this day once. In my previous life, I believed every lie exactly the way you wanted me to, and you made my life hell. So don't blame me. You owe me this."
Jason's finger trembled.
He couldn't move, but tears slid from the corners of his eyes.
I gently wiped them away.
"You're crying already? Save some for the cremation later."
My phone kept ringing.
Megan and Patricia were calling repeatedly.
But I was only a grieving widow who had just lost her husband.
Naturally, I was far too grief-stricken to answer it.
The driver sped the entire way.
A trip that should have taken 30 minutes took only 20.
Unfortunately, the crematory was crowded.
Normally, Jason would have had to wait at least 1 more hour.
I pinched my thigh hard enough to make my eyes water, then went to find the person in charge.
"My husband died suddenly. When my mother-in-law heard, she fainted and had to be taken to the hospital. I need to get back to her as soon as possible. Please let my husband be cremated first. I can't lose my mother-in-law either."
The person looked genuinely surprised.
It was probably the first time anyone had begged to cut in line for a cremation.
"I understand you're in a hurry, but the other families have been waiting too. It wouldn't be fair."
As he spoke, however, he held out one, fingers rubbing together expectantly.
I understood immediately.
He wanted money.
There was no time to waste.
I transferred 2,000 dollars to him.
"Please help me. I'm an orphan. After my husband died, my mother-in-law is all I have left. I can't bear to lose her either."
The bribe worked.
Jason was moved ahead of everyone else and placed inside the cremation chamber less than 10 minutes later.
The employee reached for the ignition button.
I stopped him.
I couldn't let the employee be the one to start the cremation and later be blamed for Jason's death.
More importantly, I wanted to be the one to carry out my revenge.
After I insisted, the employee agreed to let me press the button.
At that exact moment, shrill screams rang out from the entrance.
"Stop! Stop! Don't cremate him!"
Patricia and Megan barged in.
Whether the drug was still in her system or the shock was simply too much, Patricia collapsed in the doorway.
"Stop! Bring him out!"
Megan ran toward me like a madwoman and grabbed my hand before I could press the button.
Tears streamed down her face, and her nose was running.
"Rachel, wait. Jason's mother still has something to say to him."
Patricia gasped for breath.
"Get out of here. I won't let you cremate my son. I'll handle it myself. Throw her out."
Even with their plan falling apart, the two women were still desperate to keep Jason's fake death from being exposed.
I dropped to my knees and made myself look as meek and pitiful as possible.
"Patricia, Jason is already gone. Please let him rest in peace. I'm his wife. I'm not leaving him."
The argument drew a crowd.
The crematory staff exchanged impatient looks.
"What is this, some kind of drama? This is a crematory, not a theater. Move."
One employee reached for the ignition button.
Megan and Patricia lunged at him desperately.
They looked so frantic that he instinctively stepped aside.
Neither woman managed to stop in time.
They both crashed into the control panel and accidentally hit the ignition button. With a roar, flames engulfed Jason.
