Dundee Law is undoubtedly the most exceptional viewpoint in the vicinity of Dundee. It stands more than 500 feet high, a grassy hill surmounted by an ancient hill fort or Roman fort or Druidical ruins or something of the sort. I really don't know what it is, but it's old, and it's there. The views are tremendous, from the Sidlaw Hills to the north to the green fields of Fife to the south and eastward along the silver-blue Firth of Tay to the German Ocean. However, on that Sunday morning, nobody was admiring the view. We were all intent on the forthcoming race. The dawn rose, silver-pink from the Tay, ghosting across the huddled mud-grey town below, where the smoke spiralled from hundreds of chimneys, and the barking of a dog rose upwards.
