CHAPTER 11 DUNDEE, MAY 1827 The wind had risen as we spoke, so it fairly blasted us the second we emerged from the confines of Milne’s Close into the Nethergate. We both grabbed our hats. “I am sorry,” I said again. Barbara glanced at me coolly. “Unfortunately, your sorrow does not help,” she said. She strode along in front of me, so I had to hurry to keep pace with her long legs. “It’s not entirely your fault, Miss Easson. To be truthful, I knew you were watching us and rather played up to it, I’m afraid. Whenever I saw you watching, I would lean closer to Mr Fairweather.” She seemed rather amused at her subterfuge. “I rather enjoyed toying with your emotions.” Once again, I felt like slapping this oh-so-clever woman. “Did you, indeed,” I said. “Yes, I did, indeed,” Barbara replied.
