Chapter 2Kenneth had noticed De Luca’s café on Gloucester Road since it was on his route to the technical college. On the first Thursday in September, tired and hungry after his day shift, unwilling to wait at the bus stop in the pouring rain, he decided to treat himself so he could keep dry until his bus was due. These places were springing up in the main shopping streets that ringed the city centre since rationing had stopped, he thought.
