Forty-Two – A Fitting VerdictOn Thursday, 11 October, the coroner's inquest into the death of Catherine Eddowes met at the City Mortuary in Golden Lane for the second and, shockingly, last time. It had originally convened during the previous week, Thursday 4 October to be exact, with a single adjournment. Fifteen so-called witnesses testified, including two doctors, three plod detectives of varied ranks, and five peelers. It was a dull affair, of course, and the newspaper accounts did nothing to liven it up. There were, however, several points of interest.
