WHISPERS IN THE DARK
( Sophia's pov)
The laughter came first from the pack.
"Low, sharp, annoying."
It followed me like my very own shadow, as I walked gradually and reluctantly behind the dispersing crowd, my head lowered but my eyes were painfully alert. Every pace I took felt debilitating and weakening, as if the weight of Alpha Ryder's words had tied itself to my legs and hands.
“Did you see how perplexed her face was?
A short slim girl's voice cut through the night like a blade.
As I looked at the pack involved in the conversation I found that it was Clara, beta's daughter who had muttered such a thing.
Her voice always carried that sweet poison hidden beneath a facade of innocence.
She was a notorious daughter of Beta, who was known for her gossip.
“I almost felt bad for her," another voice from the pack added followed by a soft chuckle.” Almost”.
My fingers curled into fists.
“Five years," Clara continued from where she had stopped, her tone dripping with ridicule.
"She really thought she stood a chance to get accepted by the almighty Alpha Ryder Blackwood."
The pack laughed hysterically.
Each word they muttered made my heart ache. It wasn't just the rejection I received from Alpha Ryder anymore - it was a public ridicule and humiliation.
I forced my legs to keep moving regardless of the gossip I'm hearing from the pack in front of me.
Don't react.
Don't break.
But my wolf stirred uneasily inside me, pacing like a wounded creature.
I swallowed hard, my throat tightened as drops of tears threatened to drizzle off my eyes again.
I refused to let the pack see my panic and grievance, i didn't want them to see my tears. Not tonight, not ever again.
"She’s nothing but an omega in disguise." She's truly a weakling."
That was where the straw broke the camel's back.
I stopped.
The laughter faded quietly as my scream caught their attention. Slowly, they turned around
to see who screamed.
The others watched eagerly, "like people waiting for an exhibition."
For a minute there was total silence between us.
“Oh! "Did you hear us?" Clara asked.
I met her gaze.
For the first time that night, I didn't look away
“You talk too much”, I said quietly
Her blue eyes lifted in amazement and surprise.
“And you dream too much." she said.
A few sneakers echoed behind her.
My chest tightened, but I stood my ground.” At least I had the courage and vision to dream."
This assertion of mine wiped the smirk off her face for some seconds.
Then it came back, sharper than before.
“And look at where it got you. Clara said, her voice filled with pain and a hint of nefariousness.
You look rejected.
Broken.
"Pathetic." Clara continued.
Clara's word lingered in the air.
Pathetic?
My wolf snarled
I took a step forward, my heart aching and beating very fast, my voice steady despite the anger filled in me.
“Say whatever you want to say tonight”
“Because it's the last time you would ever see me in such a state like this."
That word of mine wiped the laughter from the faces of the pack.
That caught them off guard.
"Clara narrowed her eyes in surprise and shock.” And what is that supposed to mean?”. She questioned
“It means”, I said, lifting my chin slightly,” this version of me ends tonight”.
For a second, no one spoke. Then one of the pack scoffed."Listen to her. Still pretending to be strong when she's just an omega."
But Clara didn't laugh this time, she was watching me carefully now.
Her face filled with curiosity and inquisitiveness.
Good.
Let her see it.
Let them all see it.
“I may have been rejected, looked down on by Alpha Ryder Blackwood and the entire pack”, I continued, my voice gaining strength,” but I am not finished”.
Clara let out a soft smile, trying to hide the fear, though it sounded less certain now. “You really think you can become something after tonight?”
I stepped closer
My face filled with courage and audacity.
“Yes “
The confidence in my voice surprised even me and my wolf.
“And when I do”, I added quietly”, you will remember this moment."
A strange tension filled the space between us.
For once, Clara didn't have a quick reply.
I walked away before she could recover. I didn't need to hear anything else
I walked straight to my small house.
The path to my small house felt longer than usual.
The night had grown colder, the wind brushing against my skin like a warning of what was to come. The pack ground that was once filled with celebration, now felt empty, deserted no longer giving the exuberant energy it had given at the onset.
Lonely.
By the time I reached my door, my body ached - not from physical pain but from the pain, trauma and tribulation I had passed through.
I pushed the door open slowly. The familiar scent of the air freshener in my room greeted me but it brought me no comfort.
I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.
Silence was all over.
Heavy. Suffocating silence.
That was when it hit me again.
The rejection.
The laughter from the pack.
The humiliation.
The words and everything hurt me.
“You are too weak”
My knees gave out.
I sat against a sofa chair near the entrance of the door as tears finally spilled over.
I couldn't withhold it this time around because it came with full force.
My chest heaved as silent sobs shook my body, my wolf whimpered softly, sharing my pain.
For years i Sophia had loved Alpha Ryder Blackwood who humiliated me before the entire pack today.
I had believed in him.
I had trusted him.
But this was how he decided to treat me eventually.
And in a single moment, he destroyed it all.
“Why?” I whispered into the emptiness.
But no answer came from my wolf.
Only silence.
Slowly, the tears began to fade off replaced by something else
Something quieter.
Something colder.
I wiped my face with the back of my hand, breathing unevenly
“No more”, i murmured.
No pain crying.
No more beginning for attention.
No more waiting to be chosen.
But now I've become too determined.
If I were weak, then definitely I would become strong.
My gaze moved towards the mirror in front of me
I walked to it slowly not recognising the girl staring back at me.
"Red eyes, tears streaked cheeks, broken expression.
“Sophia ,"this would be the last time you would cry over Ryder Blackwood.
My wolf stirred again, calmer now.
I nodded slightly.
I would push myself towards and beyond every limit
I would stand before Alpha Ryder Blackwood again.
Not as the girl whom he had rejected.
Not as the girl the pack ridiculed.
But as someone he could never ignore and when that day came he would regret everything.
I turned away from the mirror and walked towards my bed, exhaustion finally creeping in.
Tonight
I was rejected
But soon my new story would begin
While reminiscing and thinking, I was petrified by a knock on my door.
Yes, "who's that?" I asked with nervousness.
It's me.
I froze.
Because that voice, i knew it too well.
The last person I never expected to see tonight, was standing at my door.
