Matt
I had to be careful. My father was meticulous. He made sure someone tracked my every move. It made it impossible to snoop around the territory for the labs he kept hidden.
But I had to try. I had to find out what he was doing. I was his son, after all. I deserved to know.
I waited until everyone was asleep and then I snuck out of the house. I headed for the hills, where I knew the labs were. I had no idea what they looked like, but I knew they were disguised as houses.
I made my way through the woods, taking the paths that led to the hills. It was a cloudy night, so I could barely see anything. The trees were a dark blur, and all I heard was the sound of my own breathing.
After a while, I reached the open fields of the hills. There were no more trees and the grass was tall and tangled. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the labs, but I knew the chances of that were slim.
I was making my way through the grass when I heard someone call out,
"Matt!"
I froze. I turned around, but I couldn't see who it was. It had to be someone from my family – maybe it was my grandmother or one of my sisters.
"Matt!"
I turned around again. This time I saw someone moving through the grass toward me. It was a man. He had a long coat on and he was wearing a hat over his eyes.
He came toward me and held out his hand. "Come with me," he said in a low voice.
I didn't know who he was, but it was clear he was working for my father. He was going to drag me back to the house, so I bolted away from him, sprinting through the tall grass.
He ran after me, but I was faster. I could hear him panting behind me, but I didn't stop. I ran until I was out of breath and then I kept running. I didn't know where I was going, but I didn't care. I just kept running.
He was too slow to keep up with me, and soon I was out of his sight. Still, I kept running. I was not going to let him catch me. I heard the truck engine in the distance and knew he was driving away. I stopped running.
I sat down on the grass, still panting. Sweat dripped down my forehead, and my white shirt was soaked. I looked around. I was in a small clearing next to a forest that was thick with trees. There were tall grasses, wild flowers, and a small brook. I could hear the birds singing and the wind rustling through the leaves.
I stayed there for a long time, until my breathing returned to normal and the sweat dried on my shirt. Then I got up and walked towards the forest. I wanted to see where it went.
The trees were thick, but I could still see where it ended. The forest ended at a large lake. It was beautiful, with clear blue water reflecting the bright blue sky above. There were no clouds in the sky, and it looked like it was going to be a warm day.
I walked around the forest to get a better look at the lake. It was surrounded by dense forest and tall mountains in the distance. There were no other houses or buildings around, so I wondered how long it was before anyone else came here. I realized that this must be outside of the territory.
I turned around, intending to head back when I caught sight of a woman. A soft breeze carried her scent to me. She was Lycan. The b***h had no business on my pack's lands, or anywhere near them for that matter. Not since her bastard of an Alpha stole my mate.
I didn't want to start a fight, but I couldn't let her leave either. Not until I had a chance to talk to her.
I stepped out from behind the tree and walked toward her. I couldn't make out much about her features, but my gut told me she was beautiful. I hated that I found her so attractive. I'd had my fill of beautiful women, none of whom were mine.
"You're on our land. You're trespassing," I said.
She turned to face me, but didn't respond like I'd expected her to. She didn't apologize or back down, as most women would have done. She looked defiant and angry.
"What do you intend to do about it, wolf?" She spat. "I know you know what I am. I know you know that means any attempt to attack me would be futile."
I bristled at her words. I could feel the anger swelling up inside of me, and when I spoke, my tone was low and menacing. "I want to know what a filthy Lycan is doing here."
"I came to see Alpha Lennox." She smiled. "I have a proposition for him."
Narrowing my eyes, I took a closer look at the woman. She was beautiful, in a cold, hard way. I could see the calculation in her eyes, the way she sized me up. I didn't like the way she looked at me.
"I've seen you before." I spoke. "You're that bastard Alpha Black's whore."
"Now, now," she purred, her gaze drifting over my body. "Don't be too hasty to judge me."
"I'm not judging you," I replied. "I'm simply stating facts. You nailed Black, now you're here to do the same thing to my father."
"I see you've heard about me." Her lips curved into a smile. "I'm a little disappointed. I thought I could appeal to your better nature."
"You're not appealing to my anything," I said sharply. "What do you want?"
"Power." She shrugged. "And an Alpha willing to strip that stupid slut that took my place of her title as Luna."
"Raylyn." I whispered as the pieces began to tumble into place. The Lycan woman wanted Raylyn out so she could resume her position as the Lycan Alpha's chosen mate. "It seems you and I have a common enemy. Tell me, how did you get here without your Alpha's notice?"
"Easy. He sent me. He thought that he could pawn me off on another Alpha and sate my desire for power. When our Beta proposed the idea, I played along. They gave me exactly what I needed to go after what I truly desire."
A sly smiled curled my lips. "Conniving bitch."
"Ignorant mutt." She snarled. "Insult me again and you'll die where you stand."
"It wasn't an insult." I replied, raising my hands in surrender. "It was a compliment. I think you and I should work together. I want Raylyn and you want Black. There's no reason why we can't both have what we want."
"Oh, you want to be my partner?" She said, raising a brow.
"I do." I said, nodding. "If you'll have me."
She burst out laughing. "You can't be serious!" She said, but she was smiling. "Why would I trust you?"
"Because Raylyn was my mate before your Alpha stole her."
"Are you going to challenge Black?" She said, raising a brow.
"No." I said, shaking my head. "I have a deal with some vampires to get my mate back without a fight."
I could see the disbelief in her eyes, but she didn't say anything.
"It's true." I said. "I'll get her back, and then I'll be out of your hair."
She studied me for a moment, and then her eyes flicked to the side as she thought it over.
"What's your plan?" She said.
"I'm going to use a vampire to go undercover in his operation and find a way to get my mate free."
"That's insane." She said. "You are going to send a vampire into the heart of his operation where there is no escape, and expect them to be able to get your mate out?"
"It's the only way." I said.
"You're being reckless." She said. "It's not like some shitty movie where you can storm in and save the day!"
"I know that." I said. "But I've got nothing to lose. I'll do anything for her. Besides, if I'm reckless, then he will be too. He won't expect me to play his game, so he'll make a mistake."
She watched me for a moment, and I could tell she didn't trust me. She had every reason not to. I wasn't exactly the most trustworthy guy.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" She said. "You could always just walk away and try to find another way."
"I can't." I said. "There is no other way."
"You're making a big mistake." She said. "But if you are determined to do this, then let me help. Tell me what you owe the vampire in exchange for their service."
"My father has a poison being created in some labs somewhere in our territory. The vampires want it and any information there is on an antidote."
She nodded slowly. "I see. And you think I can help you get this poison."
"You were sent to manipulate my father, weren't you?" I replied. "I'll help you get close to him, you keep him distracted. Convince him to stop having our men follow me. I can take care of the rest."
She was quiet for a moment. I could see the gears turning as she thought about my proposal.
"I will accept this deal." She spoke finally, closing the space between us. "But if anything happens to Alpha Black at the hands of your vampire compatriots, I will find you and rip you apart limb by limb."
"Understood." I chuckled.
She stared into my eyes, her fury reverberating in my mind.
"Good," she said. "Because if you don't uphold your end of the bargain, I will make sure you suffer more than you can possibly imagine."
"I will not let anything happen to Alpha Black," I said. "I swear to you." I lied. "I suppose now that deals and threats have been made, I should ask your name."
"It's Lana." She replied. "And I already know yours, Matt."
