The next day, Irina walked into her office at the children’s relief agency. Originally from Poland, she had married an Englishman. She had been a social worker with a Catholic church in Warsaw before the war. After the victors had taken over, she’d become involved with the Resistance, helping smuggle out children.
The number of displaced children was overwhelming. It was her job to help find orphanages or families who would take them, wherever that might be. She sat at her desk and opened her engagement book. It looked to be a busy day.
