After Hazel had left, thank goodness, Aria showed me the weapons on the stands that were used by the warriors and knights in training. I had no idea elven weapons looked so badass up close, they looked like they came straight out from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and other fantasy stories, it was so amazing to look at them. Wow, there are really a lot of ‘Lord of the Rings’ similarities here- so awesome!
“So am I allowed to choose my own weapon or does the ring choose it?” I asked.
“You can choose” she answered “You’ll know when you’ve found the right weapon. But these weapons are just for our knights and warriors to use for training, I’ll show you the rest later.”
“Wait, there’s more?” I gasped.
“You’ll see” she smirked, “But the main thing, every one of us has at least 3 weapons, one for close combat, one for ranged combat, and everyone has a knife.”
“What are your weapons for close and ranged combat?”
“For close combat, I have my machete. And for ranged combat, I have my silver arrows which are my favorite to use.”
“Silver arrows huh?” I replied amusedly.
“It’s best to use silver against anything because silver can destroy certain types of danger.”
“Oh yeah, like werewolves.”
“Exactly.”
I had a feeling she was skilled with a bow and arrow, but that got me thinking? Are all elves like the ones I see in movies, specifically ‘The Lord of the Rings’?”
“Hey uh-” I began, “I need to know, is it true that elves have really sharp eyesight?”
“You got that from ‘The Lord of the Rings’?” she replied while smirking.
“You know ‘The Lord of the Rings’?” I gasped.
“Pretty much everyone in this land knows about it and other fantasy movies. In case you don’t know, some of us are able to go up into the real world.”
“Whoa, really?” I gasped again, this time more surprised “I thought Lindel and Oswind were the only ones who could do that.”
“Nope, anyone who has access to the real world can go. I’ve been up there a few times, and I have seen all of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movies.”
“Wow,” I remarked amusedly, “What did you think of them?”
“Not gonna lie, they were pretty good, but I do have some comments on how they made the elves.”
I found myself grinning by the sound of that.
“What about them?” I asked, still grinning.
“Well for starters, they did do a good job of portraying us, especially the ears. But not all elves are as wise as the ones in the movies, I mean we are intelligent in some subjects, but overall, some of us are actually pretty stupid.”
I chuckled, “You think?”
“I don’t think, I know, I’m friends with one of them. I mean he’s a great fighter and all, but he’s not always the brightest one.”
We both laughed before I added- “So what about immortality?”
“We’re not immortal,” she shook her head.
“Seriously?” my jaw dropped.
“Yeah,” she confirmed, “Did you not see the wrinkles around my dad’s eyes?”
Oh, I didn’t realize that.
“We live as long as humans do” she explained, “Although we are immune to some illnesses and we do heal quickly to small injuries.”
Whoa really? Elves are really immune to some illnesses? And they heal quickly? Lucky.
“What kind of illnesses are you immune to?”
“Well let’s see-” she began to think, “There’s pink eye, asthma, bowel polyps, certain tumors, bronchitis, chickenpox, kidney disease, and certain types of cancer.”
Blink.
“Okay it’s official,” I declared, “Being human sucks.”
“Hey, at least you don’t have to hide your ears when you’re in the real world.”
“You have to do that?”
“Yep, whether we have to wear a hat or even headphones, our ears must be hidden in the real world.”
“Unless you’re at a comic con, you’ll be a big hit.”
“What’s a comic con?”
“Uh, never mind.”
I’ve never actually been to a comic con, I’ve never been a fan of cosplay, and not to mention that it’s like Halloween but with no free candy.
“Another thing,” Aria added, “Elves share a common weakness with fairies.”
“And what’s that?”
“Iron.”
“Iron?”
“Iron burns elves and other kinds of fairies, which is why you won’t find any iron in this place.”
“Whoa,” I remarked amusedly, “Can iron actually kill you?”
“Not really, it’s not like silver to werewolves, but it does burn like hell, so keep iron away from us.”
“I will,” I promised, “So uh, what else do you have to say about the elves in the movies?”
“Well, in the book they say that elves are light on their feet and that they don’t leave footprints, that’s not true. We also can’t sleep while we walk unless we’re actually sleepwalking, although that would really come in handy during traveling.”
I’ll say. I mean I would really like it if I could sleep while taking notes in class, or perhaps even while studying. That would be so nice, and I wouldn’t have to keep falling asleep at my desk.
“But they are right about the senses, our senses are a bit stronger than humans, especially our eyesight which does make us great archers. In fact, all elves know how to use a bow and arrow.”
“Wow.”
“Which by the way, you should too.”
“What?”
“It’s highly recommended that you must learn how to use all types of weapons because you’ll never know when you might need to use them. So whatever weapons you choose, those will be your main ones, but you must also learn how to use the others as well.”
“Oh man,” I whined, “All this talk about weapons is making me more nervous.”
“Relax Jesse, take your time to get settled in, we won’t start until you’re ready.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever be ready” I breathed.
I could feel the goosebumps coating my skin again as I rubbed my arm tensely.
“Jesse,” Aria spoke in a calm tone which surprisingly soothed me “I know you’re scared, I get it, you don’t want to fight evil, I know how dangerous that sounds. But you won’t do this alone, you’ve got us to help you. We are going to make sure you become the best hero we’ve ever trained, and you are gonna be awesome.”
Sigh, “As much as you’re trying to make me feel better, that was also pretty cheesy.”
“Oh?” she replied, showing her uncertainty “Would you rather I say this then? Suck it up, Jesse! We are going to train you whether you like it or not! We will not rest until you become the greatest hero we’ve ever seen! So stop being a wuss and man up!”
“Okay! Okay! I’ll man up!” I screamed while jumping back in fright “Just don’t do that again!”
“Wow,” she giggled, “You’re pretty jumpy aren’t you?”
“I’m not proud of it” I grunted.
I seriously need to control my jumpiness, I’ve already made myself look like a fool in front of the princess and now I’m making it worse.
“Don’t feel bad, it’s actually good to feel fear, it keeps you alert.”
“Great...”
“But that doesn’t mean you should always be afraid obviously. Fear may keep you alert, but bravery is what keeps you going, remember that, it’s an important quote.”
“Um, I’ll try” I shrugged.
“You won’t try, you will.”
“Okay then, I will.”
“Good,” she smiled, “Now then, you wanna try out some of these weapons?”
She pointed to the stands that held the elven weapons as my face lit up.
“Really?”
“Sure why not? You might even find your ideal weapon.”
Sweet, I’m gonna take hold of an elven weapon. As we walked over to the stands, I couldn’t stop admiring how cool these weapons looked, I just had to hold one. I decided to try out the hatchet as I took it off the hanger, which just caused the rest of the weapons to crash down, damn. I was still holding onto the hatchet as I just stood there, eyes wide and full of guilt as Aria stared at me with surprise in her eyes.
“Yeah I don’t think a hatchet is my weapon of choice” I concluded, still feeling guilty for the cause of this mess which I know I will most likely clean up.
Hoping not to cause any more messes, I placed the hatchet back on its hanger, and that’s when the hanger broke as it fell to the floor- nice.
