Behind locked doors

The door clicked shut behind her with a finality that made Mia’s stomach twist. Her room was far from ordinary—lavish, warm, even beautiful. A canopy bed dressed in silk sheets, tall windows draped in velvet, and a fireplace glowing faintly against the shadows. It was the kind of room people dreamed of staying in. But to Mia, it was nothing more than a gilded cage. She walked toward the window and tugged at the curtains. Her breath caught. Thick iron bars ran across the glass, hidden from the outside but unmistakable up close. Beyond them stretched nothing but endless woods, dark and whispering under the moonlight. No neighbors, no roads, no chance of escape. Her fingers curled around the cold metal. “Somewhere off the map,” she murmured bitterly. The sound of the lock clicking behind her made her spin. One of Alexander’s men stood in the doorway, placing her suitcase at the foot of the bed. He didn’t speak, didn’t even meet her eyes, before leaving silently. She was alone again. Mia dropped onto the edge of the bed, her heart hammering. Why me? Out of all the women in the world, why had Alexander dragged her into this nightmare? She wasn’t anyone special. Just an ordinary woman with ordinary dreams. Yet here she was, trapped in a fortress with a man who played by his own rules. Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock. Before she could answer, the door opened and Alexander stepped inside. He filled the room effortlessly, his presence commanding even without a word. “You should rest,” he said, his voice smooth but laced with authority. “Tomorrow will be… different.” Mia rose from the bed, her fists clenched. “Different? You mean worse? You can’t just kidnap someone and pretend this is normal!” He studied her, his expression unreadable. Then, with slow, deliberate steps, he crossed the room until he stood only a breath away. She could smell the faint trace of his cologne—dark, expensive, intoxicating. “You think this is about choice?” His voice dropped to a whisper, sending a shiver down her spine. “If I let you go now, do you know what would happen?” “I don’t care!” she snapped, though her voice trembled. “You don’t get to decide my life.” His hand shot out, but instead of touching her, he pressed it against the wall behind her, caging her in. His eyes locked onto hers, sharp and burning. “You don’t understand,” he said, each word heavy with restrained anger. They’re hunting you. The people I deal with… they don’t forgive. They don’t forget. Keeping you here is the only way to keep you alive.” Mia’s breath caught. For a moment, she saw something raw in his eyes—a glimpse of fear, not for himself, but for her. Her voice softened. “Then tell me the truth. Who are you really, Alexander?” His jaw tightened. He leaned closer, his breath brushing against her ear. “The man who just made you the most dangerous secret in his world.” Mia’s knees weakened, her heart racing too fast. She wanted to push him away, scream at him, hate him. But something deep inside her—something she refused to admit—was drawn to the danger in his voice, the storm in his eyes. He stepped back suddenly, his mask sliding back into place. “Sleep,” he ordered coldly. “Tomorrow, you’ll understand more than you want to.” And just like that, he left, locking the door behind him. Mia collapsed onto the bed, her emotions tangled in knots. Fear. Anger. Curiosity. And something else she couldn’t name. As the firelight flickered across the walls, she whispered to herself, “What have I gotten into?” But deep down, she already knew the answer. She hadn’t just stumbled into Alexander’s world. She was now a part of it.
