CHAPTER 49 SAVED Later that morning, Carlos sat in the passenger seat of Pedro’s Mercedes, staring out of the window as they drove over the long bridge across the Guanabara Bay with the rising sun. They stopped in front of a house in Niteroi. “You walk towards the next house, as if we’re going our separate ways,” Pedro instructed. “I’ll distract her. Give me five minutes. Come inside and take a look around. She won’t lock the front door.” He proceeded to describe how to find the basement door, near the bedrooms. “Will I need keys for the basement? Do you think it’s locked?” Pedro shrugged. “It might be.
