June 24, 1948 June 24, 1948Bruni walked home from the cabaret and arrived at her apartment in the wee hours of the morning, tired and with aching feet. Singing and dancing all night in six-inch heels had become second nature to her, but braving the pothole-filled streets of Berlin in the same high heels wasn’t an easy task. She unlocked the door and flipped the switch to turn on the lights, but nothing happened. With a muttered curse, she groped for the flashlight she kept on the shelf by the door for these occasions. The electricity supply in the city was sketchy at best. She slipped out of her high heels and wiggled her hurting feet, while heating the gas stove to make coffee – real coffee. It was already twilight outside and she switched off the torch to save on the batteries. Waiti
